fun in this universe is as fitting as a comedian at a funeral...
it is exaggerated and definately a parody in a lot of ways, but still, it would be nice to have a serious 40k game once in a while where you can loose yourself instead of just another wannabe funny game, dont you agree ?

arent there an abundance of games which dont take themselves seriously ?

You got 11 factions in 40K, one of which has any semblance of comedy as part of its identity (the orks). It's not like the entire setting turns into a circus just because of orks

This is actually the first time I've ever heard that people want the orks to be dead serious all the time. It just seems dull to me

Guys, I tried to put on paper what orks should look like imo. Sorry for my primitive technique (ball pen), I didn't fully manage to convey what i have in my head but this is the closest i could get taking into consideration my limited skills - it should be even more grimmer, grimier, grunger and...etc.

Orks are "fun" because they are children.

Let's remember some Warhammer facts about the Orks that justify and explain their "funny" behaviour...

Orks are born from spores that grow into sort of fungus plants that, then, create orks (or gretchins, or food, it's random sort of, altho it's well designed so orks can survive anywhere they go, always having food through these fungus)

When they are "born", basically, when they come out of the fungus, they are fully huge, muscled, strong and battle ready killers... BUT they have just been born. They are newborns, battle ready and bloodthirsty, but with the emotional maturity and wisdom of ... that... a newborn.

That is why you hear them like kids, when they team up, go cocky and confident, and when they are losing, they crumble and shout "We's gonna dieeeee!" crying like babies, respecting "the bigger and stronger", like babies or kids that know they will be beaten If they disrespect.

They are childish, they are immature, and they will act exactly like that, which is FUN, because it's a childlish huge muscled killer of close to 2 meters, something quite rare.

The older they get (If they survive), they are less childlish and are stronger, more clever, and wiser. Not that you will find many "wise mature orks", they hardly ever survive to live and learn so long, but we have examples, such as Ghazghkull Thrakka, who is not a mindless, stupid, noisy "boy" in behaviour. He is an old, wise, clever and strong "man" in behaviour, and that is what is so scary about him. He's not a kiddo eager for the fun of battle, not concious of the consequences, not too young to understand that death hurts most of the times, like most orks. He is something completely different.

So... Orks should stay as they are. It makes sense and it adds a lot of flavour to the universe. We have enough serious tight asses with the loyalist space marines (With exceptions) and other factions.

EDIT: They do not even SEEK to be funny. They are not jokers, per say. They are just ridiculously childlish, and it's funny (in general) to see such behaviour in rough, huge, killing machines.

I don't see how being a fungui makes you have a funny behaviour. Fungui or not Orks are predators. Many predators start killing just right after their birth - there's nothing funny with that. I know we got used to the image of orks as cartoonish imbeciles because at the time of 1st edition of TT everything was cartoonish, SM too. But later all races evolved in a more realistic art style EXCEPT for orks - that's why they just don't fit WH40k universe stylistically in this silly form now.

The orks are not predators. They eat fungus that grows from a variation of the fungus they are born from. We can say they are vegetarians.

Neither me or anyone has said, hinted, or implied the illogical idea you've gotten of:

    Fungus = Fun.

I have said that huge ruthless and cruel killers that act childish is fun because it is odd, weird, unexpected, for you'd expect a ruthless merciless killer to say something scary, not "I am going to step on you" (Im gunna stompya!)

See? Nothing about their fun, or funny behaviour being based on the fact that they are "fungus".

It's based on that they are newborns or children, because they live so short and aggresive lives they don't grow up to "grow mature and wiser". They die fightin' before they have the chance, usually.

You can't look at them as 'children', they're nobody's children, humans have children not orks - this notion is as unfamiliar to them as modern art. And yes they are predators, they need to kill like a psychopath does.

But anywaym You're still skipping the most important thing about them: their stylisitc inconsistency with the rest of the races, You can't look at them separately, they are part of a bigger image, to which unfortunately they don't fit imo.

You have clearly not understood a single word of what I have said, nor my meaning. I've repeated myself to attempt to make you understand my point and still doesn't seem to work, so I am giving up.

If you have a problem with how the Orks are in 40K, then it's you with the problem, after all.

I tried explaining, at least. Hope you change your mind and enjoy Orks as they are eventually!

Funny coz I have exactly the same impression after reading YOUR last post. When you encounter a reasonable argument you simply turn your back. yeah i have a problem with orks and not only I as you have probably noticed, there are more people who think ork image is too 'childish' for no obvious reason.

I have not encountered a reasonable argument in any response you have given to me. Your opinion is not an argument.

I already explained why they are childlish, denying your "too childish for no obvious reason".

There is a reason, I explained it, but I will explain it again, maybe couple of times more, If still you don't get it, no problem at all.

They are childlish because they are born with their bodies "grown and ready for battle", yet their minds are those of a newborn, in practicality, they are immature, like children. They are generically childish because they never get to live too long, always killing and being killed very soon, very few get to live very long and being able to "mature mentally".

I hope there is no doubt to the "obvious reason" to why they are "too childish" now that I have written it big so you can't miss it.
