Stealth Units/infiltration How Will It Work

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by bossaroo, Dec 11, 2013.

  1. Yes very true haha, have 4 levels of stealth then I guess,

    Eg.
    Standing still: 100% stealth
Walking: 70-90% stealth (affected by aiming movement speed)
Normal speed: 30-60% stealth (affected by aiming movement speed)
    Sprinting: 0-15% stealth

But also added to this it could be the time you're doing a speed for.

    Eg.
Sprinting reduces your stealth from the initial sprint stealth at 15% to 0% stealth after 7 seconds of solid sprinting.

With the jumps in percentages from movement speeds this could be represented in your stealth cracking or something and making a hinty effects small flash and sound that gets more visible dependant on your speed level as to help your opponent determine infact you're there stealthing.

I'd like to think that there are more factors. Talents, gear, race and maybe even subfaction choice.

Edit. So that all these above would have effect on those speed levels that you stated above.

  3. Yea exactly right, to add on there should also be zones where stealth abilities are unavailable to use, certain enemies (Players or npcs) should also have other means of detecting stealth.

And to add to my previous idea receiving damage lowers your stealth level greatly and when you lose say 30% of your health your stealth completely disappears and goes back to cooldown (10-30 seconds?)

Edit. In reference to the word "stealth" I mean going invisible according to my speed examples shown previously + other factors added in.

The damage thing seems fair. A stray bullet can still ruin stealth. That people sneaking use more caution.

Then people would be constantly bush checking and spy checking every where but let them waste their ammo so dey can't shoot back at meh so I can DROWN DA GITZ IN DA DAKKA ok but seriously that might happen like if tf2 engineers go crazy hitting everything with a wrench trying to find a spy

If that became a thing I'd just get a squad to split into two groups. The 'make the jumpy' group who looks suspicious in the bushes, and the 'shoot them in the face' group that uses the latter group as cover. And they would just waste their ammo. When people really have to fight for ammo that will probably stop.
  7. In a game like Eternal Crusade where ammunition is scarce for the most part I very much doubt people will be randomly firing their bolter in hope there is a stealth unit approaching, the only real time people would fire (for the most part) is when they're rather sure someone is near by.
Whereas in World of Warcraft (WoW) for example people do not have a rarity in their resources and do AoE attacks randomly towards where they suspect an enemy may be.
I only use the WoW example because I've never played TF2.
But I guess I'm trying to say in EC it'd be rather silly to use the rarity that is your ammunition towards a very unlikely fluke shot, if people try it towards me being the stealthy guy I'd probably quite thankful haha, as I could take them out as they reload, simply wait for their resources to run out before taking them out or simply sneak past their mayhem.
So yea... I have no doubts about this stealth mechanism having any real unfair downsides.

Right now I'm seeing a lot of use of the word "stealth".
There's discussions on how it should be limited (duration), how the enemy can counter it (with equipment, or damaging the stealthed unit, etc).

But the word itself is ambiguous, and perhaps we're not all even thinking of the same meaning. What exactly does the word "stealth" mean?
If we're referring to invisibility, can we use that word instead?
If it's not referring to invisibility, then can someone describe what they're describing?

Personally, I don't think there should be any invisibility in the game, whatsoever. Infantry like Scouts and Rangers should have the ability to avoid being picked up by detection systems the enemy has, and they should make less noise (or no noise), and should be able to lie closer to the ground and crawl faster when they're prone.
But they should not turn invisible in the middle of an open field in broad daylight.

People tend to like or dislike a certain class depending whether they're good or bad at it +/- personal preferences.
Being an infiltrator is not easy, but some of us actually enjoy the challenges this class poses
Not to mention it's an important tactical element

And yes, infiltrators themselves sometimes experience what it's like to go against another infiltrator, so they are on the same foot here with others

I'm defining stealth as the ability to blend in and go undetected. Not disappear. Basically stealth in real life and how it is in many video games where you sneak from cover to cover or blend with shadows.
