Speed advantages with no snares = crazy talk.

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Njord-Halfhand, Sep 30, 2016.

  1. I didnt introduce a speed advantage to the game without giving those put at a speed deficit a proper counter.

So in those other games with melee combat, why do you think speed advantages have counters? Could it be because nobody would play the f....ing game without proper counters to speed advantages. Because those game developers know that giving a class or build(or an entire faction no less) a speed advantage without giving other classes proper counters, that would be obviously game breaking to any game designer and any gamer. So what makes EC any different?

Eldar also get lower tier weapons which lose clang more often. I assume this is all about asymmetric balance but this is always going to be an issue.

You are talking about a difference in movement speed like you would see between wearing heavy armor vs light armor and that has already been accounted for by making Eldar more fragile. Maybe they aren't fragile enough but putting snares into the game simply to make up for a player wearing heavy armor vs a player wearing lighter armor shouldn't be necessary.

Yeah just look at snares and CC in WoW. So gud

Remember the 5-10 seconds stuns, AoE knock-down and perma-snare from Warhammer online ?

Those were so good they were nerfed to oblivion and turned the tank classes into one-trick pony CC spamming meatbags.

    Yeah I will pass.

Also if people get a snare to counter speed, what do speedy characters get in exchange ?

Dodges, especially from any jump-pack class, break D-Bash stun at the moment. JPA/Raptors are just as capable of exploiting this as Hawks.
    Fugue and Aringhe like this.
  7. Fugue Fugue Prefectus

Yeah, but we are not going to make videos about it, because who wants to see JPA users bullying ranged characters that DARED place a successful Dbash and try to vault away.

I am hesitant to agree to a snare which I interpret as a root - can still take actions but not move. But a slow, debuff to dodging or even just a sprint disable might be enough. I also think of these effecting not just Eldar.
    • Concussion Grenades - limited consumable; smaller radius than other nades so can't effect too many.
      • PlanetSide 2 has this which not only greatly slows targets but also greatly decreases their aim, as in they can't turn fast. Surprisingly I don't see it often but when I do, might as well just accept death (likely with more angry for some).
    • Getting smacked in the back - makes sense. Also an idea I think Njord brought up elsewhere.
    • Getting several shots in the back of the legs - shooting someone is easier than smacking so make it a specific point and make a choice. Go for more damaging parts or try to catch em? Actually in a team setting ya don't need to choose.
    • Being too close to an explosion? Nevermind, removes the point of having Conc Nades.
The above could disable sprinting and perhaps reduce the rate/distance players can dodge (I figure only conc nades do this if at all; Jump packs could be unaffected in this manner since it's the jump pack doing it). Concussion could also daze the target impairing vision & hearing some which is a boon in itself.

Counters would be things to counter the effect either through reducing it, immunity, cleansing or disabling it:
    • Immune - Be a TEQ, self explanatory. Some other Elites/Heroes too. I figure some wouldn't mind a helpful scratch on a hard to reach point on their back. They'd certainly return the favor!
    • Madden skillz (evasion; juke city yo) - Anticipating your enemies actions with dodges/Running in serpentine patterns (which can reduce your A-B progress already)
    • Mitigation/cleansing - Support/Leader buffs - ie things that + or - dmg. Asymmetrically even. Want this on X faction? Buff dmg mitigation. Want it for Y faction? Buff dmg output. Potentially confusing/annoying handling it that way though.
    • Mitigation/cleansing - Load out options to counter the effect at the cost of effectiveness elsewhere. Could also be asymmetrical, still potentially confusing/annoying handling it that way though.
      • Could also dish out your own snare-y thingy on those who do it to you/your team. ("I ain't snared in here with you, you're snared in here with me!" | "We're all Snarediers (Soldiers) now.")
    • Disable - Debuffs such as suppression could prevent dakka from doing it. Not sure if smackery should have a disable. I mean it's a smack to the back. Hard enough to do that + in combination with the other points above I don't think it's necessary.
Note when I say cleanse I think of it as removing the effect & granting temporary immunity to the effect being applied again. Could also have Buffs/Load out options grant immunity but that could be too much.

In some instances these counters could make things feel like nothing changed but by the power of jolly cooperation & at a cost, then players on all sides can crusade merrily. Ideally with strategery as well as varied player builds & squad compositions.

    -------
While this is a discussion in itself and I don't intend to derail, I still wonder how much performance & server optimization problems factor into wanting this sorta thing and if/when we have something that does this.
  9. Maybe. But considering that lower-tier weapons can kill just as quickly, it makes me wonder. I don't exactly know where the banshee sword falls in the tier list, but if it's tier 2 then I think it should really be just one swipe. Everyone should just get one if they want to stick to this system. But this thread isn't about the parry/bash so I'll save it for another time. ;)

SH have a trail that follows them unless you lag then you should see it. If you are slow and lose it GG is were it's at. I don't have any problems with SH disappeari g unless someone else shoots me.
