Severian was a Luna Wolf, therefore he was brother of his Legion. I guess Iacton died in the story Vengeful Spirit.
Salamanders can retire and start a family, so they still have their "parts" in working order, but some chapters "fix" shall we say, their marines, so depends on the chapter

no its not, Salamanders can start families if they do really well in battle, its something they have to earn, its not exactly retiring, they still have to go fight from time to time, but they are allowed to start a family, and are given some more time off duty to spend with them, not surprising really considering how overly nice the Salamanders are to normal humans
