title says it all, i wonder..will their be a type of space combat in the game as well? Watching the festering plague ships fire its weapons onto the ultramaines puny vessel or ram another factions ship with your own to board them!

They said they have no current plans for space combat im afraid, the game will focus on infantry combat supported by vehicles.

I wish it could happen >: maybe in future updates

I would say that this could be awsome but I see few problems in this.

One... the ships are really really slow and as time progresses normaly at the planet it means the time should progress normaly in space as well which means the fleet battles would be hours long... each.

two... having a fleet on the orbit generates problems down stairs also. If one faction controls the space it would near impossible to get reinforcements on the planets surface.

three... ships are an limited expensive resource which means we could not have hundreds upon hundreds of ships blowing up daily above one planet.

four... the debree and wrecks from the ships would also generate problems down stairs if there would be hundreds of ships blowing up over one continent.

Now I can see also a lot of things that could happen but if we think about this... this would be better if the space battle was a part of a controlled area. You could choose to go to battle in space where you would join a boarding party, shoot cannons at enemy ships or what else and the space battle would count towards victory over the continent. But again this would only be in space for a few moments... space ships aint too cheap to use and there are only so many of them up in space.

So... yes to space battles if they are done correctly. I want to assault those dirty chaos ships and blow them to bits.
  5. Well I can imagine boarding missions easily but actual space combat if they do it star trek online,EVE style than it could work I can imagine a war thunderesque mini game hey you never know the game is a long way away

Although boarding parties, space combat and aerial dogfights on the planet surface all seems like it could be fun, I'm perfectly fine with them not even thinking about it all until after release. The space battles would add complications like how our home base is our ship for starters.

Aerial dogfights however would be nice to see. A battlefield would feel much more complete when you have the skys lighting up in warfare as well. On the battlefield your biggest fear isn't the enemy soldiers but their giant war vehicles. Making sure the terrain is safe to travel across is one thing but when you're having to worry about a lightning strike from above it adds a whole new depth to the game. Anti-air weapons as well as high vehicle cost would ensure that a small group of friends could neither dominate nor populate the whole map with just aircraft.

So planetary aircraft=yes but only AFTER the game has been released and has a good establishment with balance and player satisfaction.

  8. So clearly it can be done, but there is still the manner of logistics, how many could there be, how difficult to implement, and what sort of arenas/significance of taking void-space would make sense since something like this would be a game all in itself.
Before looking at this what I was interested in was the possibility of calling in airstrikes, strafing runs, bombers and the like, but if they could manage space battles with shit like this, well that's a hole new degree of epicness.
I doubt at launch, but perhaps down the line.

Space Marines are what their calling says, I hope post launch the Devs will elaborate on the matter some day.
Personally, I thrived on broad sides boarding actions via torpedoes. I did make a thread on that subject as well,
if you are interested feel free to read what others thought on that issue.

I just prefer diversity, I just don't like being confined to the soil of a planet. We're Space Marines damn it! ;)

Ships in 40k are not like ships in other universes. Most ships cannot be replaced quickly, as they are hundreds, sometimes thousands of years old. It takes decades, even centuries (for larger ships) to replace a ship that was otherwise destroyed.

Ship combat in 40k generally involves both sides pounding each other senseless with macrobatteries and lances until one ship is crippled enough to be boarded and seized. It wouldn't be feasible lorewise to have hundreds of ships all shooting each other in space. Especially since Eldar don't really commit to full on brawls, as their ships are fragile.

I'll be happy to have some cutscene where you're hurtling through space in an assault pod or rok before slamming into the ground, but space combat in 40k is rather boring unfortunately. :/
