CTFs are good, but I don't like capturing the flag multiple times in this case.... Doesn't quite feel 40K.
A Payload Escort game mode would be very 40K feeling I think. Get them weapon supplies or whatever to the base. GET TO DA CHOPPA!
Ok, try this. Imagine this takes place on the Olipsis Refinery Map Capture the Relic. The Relic spawns randomly at one of several locations inside A, B or C on the map Only one Relic can spawn at a time, until one is captured or disappears Relics are fragile and can only be carried for 2 minutes before they disappear (to prevent turtling) Relics will also disappear if dropped and not picked up within 15 seconds Spawned but not picked up Relics will disappear after 1 minute (again to prevent turtling) Teams start at their respective spawns (the team with two spawns only has the west spawn) Transports can be used for spawn locations The teams must take the relic to their capture point Both team capture points are up in the north east of the map (close but not too close together) The relic can only be carried on foot Flying or using a vehicle while carrying drops the Relic The game ends after 25 minutes or a team has captured 5 Relics Game is won if one team reaches 5 Relics before the end Game ends in a tie (Stalemate) if no team captures 5 Relics before the 25 minutes are up regardless of who has the most. This is an incentive for badly trailing teams to at least try to deny their opponents a win and to discourage the leading team from turtling. Edit: Carrying the Relic enforces a normalised maximum Sprint speed equal to the lowest possible Sprint speed (to prevent speedier races having a carrying advantage) Edit 2: The Relic carrier is also empowered by the Relic whilst in their possession, boosting their total armour and armour regen rate to a higher than normal set amount
This is way better, I meant I don't want the classic "go to enemy base pick something up, run home and go again".
The REALLY annoying thing is that we could have some of these game modes right now. No new maps needed. The idea of all points being neutral at the start could be done right now with some maps (ollipses, pegasus).
CTF would play out very differently depending on the player count of the match. 30 player team CTF would be very different from 10v10 or 15v15. 60 player CTF, what other games have you seen this in? It's in Battlefield and it's not as near as popular as Conquest, but then again nothing else is popular compared to Conquest. I guess the point I'm getting to is that it might take a lot of redesign for what might be a wildly gameplay-inconsistent experimental mode. Not that I wouldn't want to try it, but given the slow development here, not so likely. I agree we need to try more game modes.
CTF and Deathmatch wouldn't work for this game design almost at all. Too many ways to kill people too fast and none of the maps are designed for it very well. At best they would have to adapt a PVE map for something of that nature. Can you imagine TDM with nothing but PF JPAs and PCs? it'd be a nightmare of just getting one shot with no recourse and the matches would be infinitely more frustrasting than CP maps are now because getting fisted sucks, but doesn't lose you a match immediately, getting fisted as a flag carried or in a game mode where deaths matters would SUCK. You thought you hated Rokkits, PCs, Fists, Klaws, Tempest Launchers, Starshots, Striking Scorpions, Banshees, Autocannons, Abbadon's Grace, Vengeance Storm Bolter, and Kannons Before? wait until you get camped by several and are never able to retrieve the flag or that every death attempting to pull them out of their entrenched position is actively losing you the game at an increased pace. Much better would be a game mode like BF2142 Titan mode that expands on the Capture Point ticket system but adds in the extra level of some OMGWTFBBQ huge objective or vehicle(Imperial Knights/Morkonaughts) that the points contribute to taking down. This would leverage the game balancing they are already focusing on while giving plenty of opportunities for new maps and game experiences without upsetting the whole balance of the game. Something like Titan mode would also add the opportunity for a Deep Strikes, Rok insertions, Webway mass Warpjumps feature for people which would be badass to come hurtling down on some defenders heads with your whole squad in a deep strike pod It would also put more emphasis on vehicles and allow for new kinds as well since the maps would be larger. Larger maps would also make things like Lascannons, Stalker Bolters, and all manner of longer range weapons to have more impact.
2142 Titan mode was one of the coolest game modes ever. Starts on the ground with conquest style gameplay until you later either end up defending your mothership or attacking the enemy ship. Sadly not even Dice's technical expertise could save it from the technical issues it had. Eventually the game servers had to disable the ability to move the titan ships entirely as a fix to salvage the mode in a playable state. And we haven't seen anything like 2142 Titan style mode since. The version they tried to bring back in a BF4 DLC was rushed and sadly quite lacking and abandoned really.
