not sure where you heard that from. As of yet to seem to mention it as a system. and what they have demonstrated was exclusive incapacitation.
It's been mentioned in the forums several times, specifically in the general forums in several threads concerning headshots and insta-kills. Generally speaking if you take damage that kills you you go into a downed state. From that downed state you can be revived, executed, shot from a distance to finish you off, bleed out or choose to bleed out faster. Any weapon that causes massive damage (lascannons, meltaguns etc) will kill you instantly take you through the downed state and count as having finished you off forcing you to respawn.
I see players mentioning overkill ad nauseam. But im going through all the ama's and dev post and im not seeing it mentioned, which make me think it may just be hearsay
I agree with you 100% that this game would greatly benefit from the Borderlands 2 revive system. Allies will still be able to revive you, but you would have a chance to revive yourself if you killed someone while in the downed state. The rules: 1) Each time you get knocked down, your downed timer becomes shorter and shorter until finally a knock down = near instant death. 2) After a long enough cool-down without getting knocked down, your max downed timer resets back to 100%. 3) Shooting while downed is far less accurate 4) Melee will only be effective if an enemy is very low on health or gets distracted fighting one of your allies while standing next to you. The only modification I'd make would be setting far less forgiving rules than BL2 -- which gives you about 5 revives before instant death. That many revives makes much more sense for a coop game than a pvp one. Instead, I'd propose: 1st knockdown - 25 seconds. 2nd - 15 seconds, 3rd - 5 seconds. The first two stages would give you a bare minimum fighting chance. 3rd stage is just a few moments for a heroic save by an ally or a lucky self revive. The benefit: Getting knocked down won't make you feel like your personal interaction in the battle/fun factor is being completely paused. You'll at least have a chance to heroically/desperately bring yourself back up, which will give the downed status an exciting alternative to just feeling like a spectator, sitting and waiting for an ally or deciding to give up and respawn.
the devs have already said if you pushed into the down state by a strong enough attacked that its goes over the down state thresh hold instead of going into a downed state you will just die. So if you hit some one whose on very low hp with a head shot and the head shot has say a 2x damge on it, it may very well go over the damge thresh hold and kill him out right rather then put him into a downed state, same with big weapons like tanks cannons
This is great. I also support this as a rule. Downed State would definitely be silly for any of those example situations or many others (Ex. getting run over by a Rhino)
Add to that that you can simply shoot someone in a downed state and kill them from a range, so open up with your heavy bolter, they drop into a downed state, simply continue to fire and they're dead. It won't protect you from any form of damage, it's more akin to being unconscious and slowly bleeding to death, if you're in CC and your enemy puts you into a downed state he will execute you, if you're at range and you're enemy puts you into a downed state he will continue shooting and make sure you're dead, if you're hit by enough damage you go through the downed state and out the other side into death. I honestly can't see very many players lying around in a downed state unless their team mates managed to chase their opponents off.
lolno. If you want self-revives, go play Necrons. There's dead and then there's dead. When you go to the downed state, you just got killed. This is basically just part of your respawn time. If you are lucky, a medic (or any damned teammate if we're going to slap medics in the face like that) will get you back up so you don't have to sit through the whole thing. You are not entitled to that revive. You got too far ahead of your team and they can't reach you? You done goofed, enjoy the respawn screen. Maybe next time you won't overextend. Singleplayer/RPG babies are just going to have to get used to the reality of dying in a shooter.
I'm not saying it's perfect, but it would certainly fit with the heroic aspects of 40k where soldiers fight until their dying breath. Also, no matter how good of a player you think you are, there is no way to avoid being killed/knocked down many many times per play session in any sort of action-focused pvp game. You must consider the reality of downed state as something that will be frequently experienced, not ignored as a thing only "lesser" players will deal with. Edit: Maybe a compromise worth considering would be: in downed state you could fire (at reduced accuracy) and also crawl so that you could defend yourself from would-be executioners and get into a better spot to be revived -- but only an ally would actually be able to revive you?
