The Iron Reavers

The Iron Reavers Chapter was founded in the 34th Millennium in response to a prophecy by imperial scriers. It was predicted that a great threat would emerge from the Vortex of Despair and so the Chapter was strategically founded on the nearby world of Gerringaurd, a desolate ice planet pocked with several dilapidated Hive Cities. Besides collecting their tithe of new recruits and armaments from the industrial leviathans the Chapter does little to interact with the populace, preferring to recluse themselves in their isolated Fortress Monastery in the southern mountains when their units are not deployed on campaign. This isolation is due in large part to the suspicion that the Chapter holds all in, particularly the local population, as the prophecy foretells that the sons and daughters of Gerringaurd will play a key role in whatever heresy is to come.

Their Fortress Monastery itself is as much a manufactorum as a citadel due to the Chapters predilection to modify their weaponry and focus on armored warfare. A progeny of the Imperial Fists, the Iron Reavers fortify themselves behind moving walls of iron as they believe that the Emperor’s will is not represented by the Codex and instead that He desired his warriors to fight by any means necessary. Above all they hold the Adeptus Mechanicus in contempt, that their monopoly on technology has led the Imperium to languish. As such they train their own Techmarines that they deploy in higher numbers than normal, each squad having at least one, and all the squadmates are trained to at least preform rudimentary repairs to the Chapter’s many armored units.

Of the many modifications the Chapter does to their equipment that they receive from the Hive factories, the one they consider most important is the adaptation of Astartes vehicles to be piloted by normal humans. Discontent to waste Astartes warriors on duties that don’t require the efforts of a post-human super-soldier, all of the Chapter’s Predators, Rhinos, and almost all other vehicles save the Land Speeder due to it open top that makes the pilot vulnerable to small arms fire are crewed and manned by mortals for efficiency of resources. While augmented with neurolink hardware of their own design these humans crews allow the Chapter to fight with ample fire support without losing difficult to produce Astartes to what they consider menial duties.

This is indicative of their Codex-divergent Chapter organization, which bears only a superficial resemblance. The Chapter is Organized into 10 Companies of 100 Astartes, though more due to attrition caused by near continuous deployments than any real adherence to the Codex. Of these most warriors will be half Tacticals and half Devastators, with Scout troopers serving as Neophyte support troops for the Devastators. Each of these Companies will also be led by a Command Squad of Terminators. In addition to this each company is supported by the aforementioned armored column manned by human crews, as well as two squads of human soldiers consisting of ten men and a heavy weapon crew for every squad of Astartes. These human squads primarily role is to disembark when the Armored divisions set up firing positions and make field fortifications, digging in while the heavy weapon crews provide additional fire support.

Most appallingly to their critics in their Mechanicus detractors, much like the Dreadnoughts, human soldiers wounded too heavily to be saved are rebuilt as combat automatia, the Chapter needing only their brains and preferably brain stems, which their apothecaries preserve much like geneseed, to build a new body. There is no specific number set for these support units for their Organization, it is instead considered a point of pride for the Tech Marines to produce as many of the best quality automations as they can, it not being uncommon for two or more Tech Marines to argue over the body of a heroic fallen mortal over who has claim to their brain matter, and a shameful rarity for particularly fine specimens to suffer a “tragic accident” that allows the Tech Marine to claim them for their collection of artfully created battle automatia.

The Iron Reavers see none of this as heretical, instead believing it to be closer to the Emperor’s design of the Astartes, Imperial Army and Mechanicus working in unison, and due to their close ties with the Administratum the recordings of these less than complaint attributes are lost in the staggering Imperial bureaucracy, in exchange for giving special priority to assets considered essential, though some within the Chapter grumble that many of these frequent deployments are meant to cull their numbers to keep them at nominal strength. This suspicion is not unfounded, as in the 38th Millennium during Abandons 9th Black Crusade the Chapter Master of the time Victorion harried the Despoilers forces, wining many victories both in naval actions and ground deployments in hit and run strikes. Chapter Master Victorion is attributed with the refocus of the once Codec Compliant Chapter towards their abnormal doctorine, as heavy losses incurred during the conflict forced him to rely more heavily on mortal soldiers and armored units. It is believed this divergence sealed his fate, as during a cleanup operation of Heretics left behind as Abaddon returned to the Eye of Terror, Chapter Master Victorion was laid low by a well-placed and high caliber sniper round.

Though they consider themselves the last true sons of the Emperor, holding all others in suspicion, self-assured of their purity that manifests itself in a deep hatred for mutants in their perversion of the human form and deeper still hatred for Orks with their blasphemous technology, this belief is in part compensation for a flaw in their geneseed. Over the years a defect has manifested in their Catalepsean Node. While completely negligible under normal circumstances, during prolonged combat actions where normal(for an Astartes) sleep patterns are not possible and the half-sleep is required, their dysfunctional Catalepsean Node causes them to enter a dreamlike state where hallucinations are common. In this state, which they call “The Visions”, they rely on their Chaplains to keep them focused on what is real, though mistakes are made, usually resulting in wasted ammunition or unfortunate butcheries of allies.

Despite this it is the secretly held dream that once their purpose on Gerringaurd is fulfilled that they will rebuild the Astartes Legions and begin the Great Crusade anew to cleanse the Imperium of rot and bring the Emperor’s dream of total human domination of the galaxy to glorious fruition.

Thanks, I haven't really talked about my main force for a while, but I tried to subtly tie them together with these guys as a foil. They're supposed to be mostly ignorant of it but the prophecy that lead to their founding is of course that the Kronos is going to emerge from the Vortex and the De'Tortors are coming back to reclaim their homeworld during the 13th Black Crusade.

So they're ensnared by some Tzeentchian fuckery.
