Amazon and Walmart recently decided to stop selling them in response to the shooting. Americans seeing corporate censorship of real life responded thusly with many many more Dixieland Flags going up as an FU. They really should have seen this coming, Walmart just killed its Southern Division.

It has different meanings for different people. From the rather obvious White Supremacists, through people who see it as being culturally significant, to people who are fans of The Dukes Of Hazard. It's strongest link is with the American Civil War, where it is usually perceived as representing Pro-Slavery interests. Though that is probably an over-simplification of the various issues that led to that war.
