So we all know Nobz are going to end up being the elite and hero classes for the Orkz. That's all said and done. But that'll mean a nob would be sparsely seen on the field. However the hell the hero and elite classes work, the fact of the matter is, we're not going to see them very often. Which kinda sucks. Because they're the ones that get the runts in line, they're the ones that make the Orks scary. They're the leaders of the group for a reason. Because they're bigger, meaner, and greener then the other gits. So granted that Ork progression will not end up with your Ork getting bigger over time and essentially becoming a nob, here's another means of incorporating Nobz onto the fields. Squad leaders in a given squad become Nobz. Because that's how Ork leadership goes. The one who leads is the one whose bigger and tougher then all the other boyz. And that's exactly what would happen, they're bigger, and tougher then the boyz they're leading. I'm not going throw percentages around for a hypothetical idea that might not even work. But here's the general gist. Squad leaders play an even more essential role for the Orks. They're the ones to rally behind, they're the ones giving orders, they're the ones that keep the squad intact and not flailing around like a bunch of babies. As a result, Orks that fight near their squad leader get a small bonus to damage/durability/etc. It'll help inspire team play in the Orks, and help bring about the feel of a real horde. However, losing a squad leader would hurt the Orks more then anyone else. When the Nob dies, Ork moral would plummet. And without the numbers to keep the Orks in the fight (WAAAGH effect) then their fighting strength would falter until they regroup with their squad leader. Just throwing an idea out there, not even sure if it's already been discussed before. Just wanted to think of something that'd make Orks feel different and add to that asymmetrical balance thingy I keep hearing about.
I'm hoping that there will be specific trees of unlocks for squad leadership that you can get and I'm hoping for orks that some nobby stuff is included. I've always enjoyed games that reward players for being decent leaders and volunteering to take that burden on themselves.
The problem with Nobz is that they'll be huge meaning an easier target. Then they'll have to balance out that fact with health increases and what not which sounds like a balancing nightmare. Not to mention all the spacial problems in maps.... imagine how much more you'll get stuck or run into things right now. I think if they make the squad leader noticeably taller, like a foot or two, and beefier it would be just as fine. Orkz will follow whoever is da biggest which doesn't necessarily mean a Nob.
True... But that doesn't mean that's how they work in EC, where squad leader is more of a fancy title then a role at the moment. You know what, fair enough. I can live with squad leaders being noticeably but not ridiculously taller. But if space is going to be an issue with the size of the Orkz, how are they going to make the elite and hero Nobz work? Those guys have to be huge, or else they won't feel like Nobz
Bigger doesn't necessarily mean taller. Orks are pretty stoopy anyway, so you could add only half a foot or so to the height, but have the head set a bit lower and have them a lot broader. They're going to be walking bullet sponges though, so they would need appropriately increased health/armour.
What many Ork players will have to accept is that it may hurt gameplay to have a 10 foot Ork wandering around with a giant target on his back! At some point, gameplay has to trump lore. Just look at the issues with the plasma gun, and loyalist SCUMMMM wanting Chaos Chainaxes! That said, @GobMaw_HellSmasha do we know for certain that our "veteran" status won't make our Boyz Nobz? Could we not just have even BIGGA Nobz be elites? I have faith in the creative team to make Nobz stand out without needing to just rely on height, though when the Warboss is inevitably added as a hero class.. A 10 foot green machine of death and rage would be very amusing. Orkz are a tricky race to implement with all our qwerks and special mechanics (I don't imagine any other jump assault troops can suicide bomb) we just have to be paitient and see how they turn out! We also should keep in mind that if the basic Ork Boy comes off in any way as superior to the space marines the loyalists will whine.. Before you know it, they'll want their sergeants and hero units to be taller then the other basic space marines. "Hmm, Sergeant Killiest, why are you ten feet tal?" "Because the emperor wills it."
Well that's the thing Veteran status may very well make you a nob I don't know The idea about making squad leaders Nobz was if veterans weren't going to be able to become Nobz through progression. Just so Orks can have Nobz more present then every once in awhile when someone fields an elite or a hero
