So About That Outcast Ranger...

Hi everyone, we just landed back in Montreal a few hours ago and Michael told me there were concerns about the Outcast Ranger. I'll lay it all out for ya:

    • We are not currently planning any sniper-focused classes for launch, including Rangers and Scouts.
    • A sniping role, however, is something that will be available for all factions as a subset of particular classes, just not the entire focus of any class.
    • Rangers will be available as a proper class some time post-launch (we're planning ahead).
    • Stealth is currently planned for launch (although we're still working out the details), and will not be exclusive to purchase-able characters.*
    • The Outcast Ranger is a specific character with a limited loadout, like the other elite characters at launch. He is not as powerful as a hero-level character, and therefore can be manifested more frequently.
    • We will present a list of the planned classes for all factions before the launch of the Founder's Program.

    * (Apologies if this particular point changed from what was said earlier)

We spent a long time trying to work out which heroes would be appropriate for the Founder Program for each faction, and one of our biggest priorities was making sure that anything we put in the store did not have any wholly unique gameplay that would feel like a requirement. The characters in the founder & launch store are flavors and cool identities, but they do not have exclusive roles that would cause any sort of handicap if they were not purchased.

That said, I totally understand how this could be perceived as something nasty, particularly given the order in which the information was given out. Our intention was to provide a way to take on the identity of a Ranger for fans of that particular unit given that we wouldn't be providing it as a proper class for some time.

So what I'd like to know from you Eldar players is your genuine opinion on this character, given the above information. We're constructing the Founder Program with your support, so when there's a problem we want the opportunity to address it.

So let me get this straight, the ranger is essentially a middle ground between a standard class and a hero and is only one of the possible sniper builds? Seems perfectly legit in that case. Also can you possibly shed some light on how you're planning to implement stealth?
Oh, and what other possible sniper builds can be made? I can understand SM and CSM but I'm not sure if Orks have any snipers among the boyz at all and I don't know of any other Eldar snipers.

So they are gonna be exclusive (as class not that model in particular) for a limited ammount of time? I'm ok with that, as long as is not something over the top like 6 months or a year.

Gameplay wise? A couple of things, he has a sword (and looking at the grip looks like it's 2 handed sword), can this kind of classes compete with specialist classes? for example this Outcast has any advantage against an assault marine at melee? And not sure if this is just the artist but that pistol doesn't look eldar (maybe an eldar fusion pistol?) are we going to see more eldar units (other rangers or corsairs) using non eldar tech?

Orks have no snipers. Ork Lootas used to get them (back when sniper rifles auto-hot on a 2+, and 4+ with orks), but no longer.

Remember that time everyone freaked out over nothing? How silly do those chicken littles feel right now...

I like where you're going with the elite characters being a taste of future classes and look forward to seeing more of them from all the factions. Seems like a fun way to prebalance added classes.

Wow so there is going to be Elite AND hero classes?

my hopes of a noise marine grow!

Certain weapons and accessories for both Eldar and Orks allow them to have more accurate fire (although I use that term loosely for Orks) and provide zoom/targeting modes. Keep in mind we're doing the universe and not just the tabletop so as a character you have the opportunity to be not just be a rank & file troop (although there is plenty of that too). Dire Avengers are well-rounded Aspect Warriors with opportunities to specialize in short- or long-range, just like how Tactical marines can use Stalker Bolters to spec more into a sniper-style role.

Haha, I mostly meant about the whole concept of having a Founder elite Ranger, but that feedback is appreciated as well! I'll pass it on to the artist. Note that the actual store item will have more information of course. :)

So is the team aiming to have snipers more akin to the Stalker bolter than the traditional single shot style? I.e. will we see snipers using rifles more akin to semi-auto rather than bolt action? Also this setup sounds like sniper rifles won't have too much more range than other guns.
I like that idea personally as it curbs the bolt baby hill humper epidemic and fits a longer TTK game far better than fishing for bolt action headshots, but will we see tradition bolt actions as well?

Can't blame me for trying to squeeze some extra info :D
