Single Server, 1k Palyers? But How?

When the Devs say Single Server, it sounds awesome.
You start to imagine vast plains that you are free to explore, many places of interest that factions would eagerly fight each other for, warbands of players running to and fro across the whole territory, looking for some adventures.. You can imagine that your small group can have a ride on a transport and suddenly run into some enemy group and have a fight, or a large strike force and get stomped on, or you can hear the roar of mighty cannons and get to the place where there's a big battle going on with hundreds of players participating, and you can join it or just pass by... And something around this is happening across several continents.. Sounds fantastic, but then you get to know that this awesome single server is for around 1000 players ... There is certainly something I do not quite understand.
It is pretty obvious that there would be much more that 1K players online at any given moment. Vast sandbox territory in a 40K setting and 1K players just don't compute together.. Well, we have 4 factions at the moment and any of them is already significantly larger than 250 players, and that's 2 years before launch.

I would be really glad if someone could explain this all to me.
    Thank you in advance.

Im hardly an expert, ive just been lurking for ahile. From what i understand (and someone correct me if im wrong!) is that its one planet with each campain taking place on one continent at a time for three months. The idea of 1000 players on at one time doesnt mean across the whole server, instead i think they mean 1000+ players visiable on screen at one time. This way they get the epic scale that they are going for, and aparently have the tech for. But they are being vague (sneaky gitz!) about what exactly that is or how it works.
Still two more years brother.... two ..... more .... years .....

Please try PlanetSide2. It is Free2Play and you will understand everything. It was the first game to ever do such a thing and as far as I know, EC will be the 2nd. They have a 2k population limit per server.

A lot of the details will be done on your computer (if you have a good enough computer to run such a game) and it all works out fine until too many people gather up in the same spot. O the lag when that happens.

This thread propably gives you the answer you're looking for.

EC is the first game to try such a thing via Pikkoserver Technology. Planetside2 has a large population servers but the actual number of players in one battle area is not 1k, let alone over it.
Also, the actual number of players in a single battlefield, exceeds over 1k (single battle scenario), but the actual population of the server(or servers since the main server is a bunch of smaller servers) is much higher than 1k.

Thanks so much for the answers, I can see more clearly now.
And it's fantastic news, really, now it's up to Devs to make this game so great that it wouldn't be hard to see a full-scale 40K battles)

For sure, the details vary, but PS2 was the first to do this large scale thang. EC is doing it in another way.
  7. Eve Online runs 50k+ people on one server.

Biggest fights in one system have reached 4000.

I believe you are correct, but I can't find a reliable source to say definitively that is the case.

I played Eve a lot, and this will probably take over... Eve is incredible, but also there is a lot missing.
I hope they do manage to get 1000+ going in this game, although I don't think it should be limited to any number, just to what's physically possible at the levels of hardware at the time of release and increase as hardware gets better. there's a long time yet for stuff to get to the stage where its viable to have 3000+ unique players in a single battle, all with individual items etc. But I think by End 2015 we will be there... hope :p
