I've come up with this idea lately, really don't know if anybody had already mentioned it and didn't really know where to start discussion so I figured out it could be the best place. Testudo or turtle formation. I think I could imagine this in EC. Not only because it looks cool but also it could be a very practical way of getting through a hail of fire in some choke points by melee specialists. I don't know how hard it can be to implement, actually it shouldn't be methinks. It would definitely require the melee classes to be able to manipulate their shields so they can be positioned left, right, upwards. I dunno, I just think it could be fun feature that could attract some players to the game. It would be cool to use such a formation as well as try to break it with heavy weapons fire. What do you think guys?
It depends on many factors: the toughness of shields as a first one + it depends how tight this formation could be, if it is possible to squeeze in some shots between the shields spare spaces. Besides we'll also have extremely powerful heavy weapons like multi meltas or plasma cannons.
The only shields that would pass for tower shield sized ones in EC are boarding shields, and we dont know if those will be in (hopefully they will cause they are awesome). On the formation end, it worked back then cause there werent many creative ways to disperse it, at least not effectively. However in EC you have grenades of all types, psychic power, plasma cannons, autocannons, rockets, lascannons and so on. Oh and vehicles turning people into mulch. Basically it would make for one bad tactic where you would be helping the enemy kill you faster with less ammo spent.
How about using them in tight corridors inside building where enemy shooters are waiting for easy, unarmoured victims and where vehicles wouldn't be able to drive.
Well yes it does sound good, if you can actually know what you are gonna find inside the location you turtlewalk into. Im pretty sure you would get a dozen grenades thrown under your feet, plus anything else the enemies got up their sleeve. Basically the idea requires no special implementation the way im seeing it, if shields are ingame people simply use the walk function and raise the shield. The only thing that factors in it is how they implement the shield arm and if your entire body moves with your shield raised or only the arm that raised the shield.
Lol reminds me of blocking chokepoints on my Chosen/Black Ork in W:AR I don't know how they'd go about doing it, but as part of a thread on alternate fire-modes for melee weapons (like our ranged ones) someone asked whether Storm/Boarding Shields could have an increased blocking profile stance when actively used. Maybe even permitting the limited use of pistols/melee weapons. Kinda like the good ole Grineer Shield Lancer I guess: I imagine that'd allow the front line of a formation to approach safely as a shield wall against anything short of a Melta. You could shoot the shite out of a Grineer's feet, drop a grenade behind them or just bypass the shield with an AoE in Warframe. Storm Shields aren't simply kinetic barriers though so that would be less of a problem.
While the tetsudo formation may sound cool on paper. I agree with DjemoSRB that there's too many counters to it in this setting. Especially when you try to organize yourselves to form it.
You're such a bunch of old, grumpy, pessimists . Look at that, these guys wouldn't be unarmed, they could shoot through these shields somehow. And the fact that it can be destroyed by various weapons? - good, otherwise they'd be op, and that's what we have heavy weapons for - a perfect application for lascannon or multi melta still giving some protection to the formation. As for the grenades, they could simply bounce off if thrown not properly.
Or they could, you know, drop them at your feet. Im not saying the tactic couldnt prevail in niche situations, but they would not be in small numbers surely. Plus well, the idea in the OP is already happening by the merit of us having storm shields confirmed for being in the game, its up to the players to organize. But then again, it also as stated before, depends on how big they make the shields. Boarding shields where so massive for a reason, so they wouldnt get shot anywhere. Looking at most storm-shield designs one would simply shoot your feet off. So i guess the better question the OP should be asking is, are there going to be boarding shields ingame, cause that would automatically make testudo formations possible (aside from closing the top, which again depends on how the shield arm works).
