Re: Chainsword Animations

  1. Uhh ok.
Well first off I dont want to be offensive, but I think you're an idiot.

1: This is fantasy, not reality.
2: You're assuming a chainsword and a chainsaw are the same thing, they're not at all.
3: Both are made of completely different materials and designed in completely different ways.
4: The reason its called a chaingSWORD, is because its purpose is to be used as a sword.
5: In a universe with daemons, space Orks, psychic powers, tyranids and the chaos gods, I dont see why you think this is a serious issue..

Honestly, you sound like a troll.

I think they're more just pointing out about the 40K universe that may have always bugged them, like those little niggles we all have. Why does a bolt gun kick when the marine could just have his armour auto-compensate? Why is a jump pack a jump pack and not a jet pack? Where DO they keep all that ammo? And other such things, and I imagine it was all intended to be light hearted discussion.

No need to be rude, man~

  3. I'm all for discussing animation but it's pretty silly when you try to prescribe real world values to a Chainsword. The Chainsword is a silly weapon. We should all know that. But the Chainsword is a cool weapon. That's why we love it in fiction, because its ridiculous and over the top like most things are in Warhammer.

I don't mind the animations that are currently in the game for the chainsword, though it's basically the same animations which are used by the power sword. Hopefully sometime in the future they might address this but at the moment it's not terribly offense seeing as it's a fictional weapon that could never really be practically used in real life, I'm fine with it being used in an over the top fantasy way.

The weapon was originally invented and used by Fervants in the good ol' religion wars so yeah, science was not a priority then. And as a terror weapon, probably explains why the Repentia adopted it instead of everyone using the (surprisingly one of the better power weapons logically) neural whips used by Repentia Mistresses- terror factor of having a bunch of lamenting, screaming nuns bumrushing you with oversized chainsaw swords that may or may not be on fire.

    1. I know.
    2. The chain part of the name is a direct reference.
    3. Well, yeah, of course they're different materials, the Imperium has access to adamantite and ceramite and plasteel which don't exist in real life. As for completely different ways, not really. A chainsword literally is just a weaponized chainsaw. Their form is different, for sure, but the way they deal their damage is very, very similar.
    4. Really? I thought it was just because the Imperium weaponized chainsaw tech and gave it a weapon name.
    5. Those things are all accepted parts of the canon, and as such I have no issue with them. Realism, as it applies to fiction, does not mean depicting reality exactly the way it is in real life, with every detail intact. Instead, realism in fiction is more about whether things in the fiction happen the way they reasonably would in that fiction were its logical conclusion to be reached. In this case, a chainsword in 40k frankly shouldn't be used the way it tends to be depicted, even in 40k lore. Its origins in 40k lore, which I stated in the OP as you may recall, suggest that this weapon would not be used for quick slashes, as it was intended for an entirely different style of combat.

I don't troll. I don't know why people accuse me of that so often.
  7. Hes saying to change the function of the sword because of something that has no real effect on the IP.
    That is dumb.

Luckily heretics - the primary targets of the Sororitas - are not very well-trained or well-disciplined. Any competent military would simply cut down the Repentia with lasgun fire, as they go into battle with no armor whatsoever.

Same. They're my favorite 40k army and I hope they show up on Arkhona some day.

Did you even read the OP? I'm 100% sure I referenced the reason for the chainsword even existing in the lore and described why the very reason it was invented means it should not be used the way it's depicted.

I didn't make that origin story up, you know.
  10. Think you're missing a key factor here.

    It is a chainsaw.
Designed to be used like a sword.
    Hence the name.

The only thing that needs to be changed is the effect for when a chainsword hits something, as the blades would cause sparks down wards with the chain.
Space marines aren't cutting up fruit or soft drink bottles, they're killing people/xeno with powerful swings from a chainsaw designed to not break from the impact.

You cant compare anything besides the general idea of a chain with blades that cuts things.
