Hey if they want to literally flag their positions I'm all for it. I'm sure audacious armor choices will work out great in a skill based shooter, I just hope they aren't expecting any Plot Armor Saves
Might as well, Emperors Children are audacious all the time. It's not like most Space Marines use camo, in the vast majority of situations I think the banner might not actually matter that much....more so if you just take the Chaos Icon...and you'll be way more of a target then, say, the eldar regardless.
Personally I'm not much of a fan of those back banners. I really hope they add actual standards especially for the dark angels and ultramarines. Nothing beats a legion with its banners marching to war. Also camo is pointless for spacemarines since they are essentially walking cover.
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtAH7kGEqic i dont' care: i want my banner since the first time i watched this intro.
What about banners on Eldar? They're obviously not going to be as tough and what not as a space marine. Hopefully the banner will be somewhat smaller so it's not as much of a drawback.
The only Eldar I can think of stupid enough to carry back banners are: a) Autarchs, who are stupid b) Yriel, who is a bit stupid c) Dire Avenger Exarchs, who are very stupid
I think the most viable option is actually listed in the first post: Make the effects of banners scale with the amount of people currently getting benefits/ group size. This simultaneously prevents the issue of more, smaller squads being preferable to a few larger ones while also providing a clear role to banner bearers
Why not to introduce different tiers of banners then? Eg. squadleader/bannerbearer (subtle stuff like halo, chaos star), strikeforce leader/bannerbearer(s) with stronger or different kind of buffs but coming at a price of bigger "shoot me" (flag on a pole)... Basically the stronger buff you want, the bigger thing you have to wave/be part of.
Not to insult anyone's intelligence here, but keeping buff stacking under control is nothing new to gaming. There are plenty of "lessons learned" over the last 10 to 15 years of gaming as far as how to handle buff stacking in a group setting. The only problem we could run into is if Behavior chooses to try to totally reinvent the wheel when it comes to buff stacking, rather than borrowing from some of the tried and tested mechanics that have worked in the hundreds, if not thousands of similar games developed prior to Eternal Crusade. That said, I'd still like to see Behavior take those mechanics and mold them in order to best represent the reality of the 40K Universe.
The problem with basing the banner buff on the size of the group... is the fact that depending on the time of day or night you're playing, what area of the world you are playing, the number of friends or guild members you have online, your group size might be smaller or larger through no fault of your own because of the number of players(or lack there of) online. There are too many variables at any given time that could effect the size of your group. A "flat stat" buff across the board, regardless of group size, is the best way to go IMO. If buff stacking is handled correctly, there shouldn't be any advantages of traveling in smaller groups with multiple banners. In fact I'd go so far to say that only gross negligence on the part of Behavior and the Beta testers would allow for such an obvious exploit to go live when the game officially launches. I don't see that happening. Disclaimer: The flat stat buff from banners should be a totally different animal from how the Ork Waaagh mechanic will work.
