If you want to compare it, start with the basics. WoW, SWTOR, GW-GW2, Defiance all of them themepark mmos where you have lots of quests to do, etc, basically the whole world was ready and made for you, and your choices mattered little to none, becouse the quests holdng your hands, and only once or twice did you really left a mark on the world, like all the other players too. Then there is the sandbox type (EVE online, Perpetuum), where they basically not holding your hands for long, and pushing you out to the world to do what you want, and shape the world in the way you want it to look with other players. In terms of basic type, this one will be a sandbox game. You wont be able to find quest npcs who going to tell you what to do, and there will be only generic goals. It matters if you make friends or enemies, and pull decisions what will you do in a situation. Nuke down an enemy convoy in a relatively peaceful sector? Do it. Probably the enemy going to retaliate it somehow, even a new front can be opened in that area. You want to be a jump pack master who shall be asked every time someone needs some proper assaulting? Be the man. The factions, and most certainly the war council (what made entirely of players) going to decide what direction the war efforts going to head. Its entirely your choice to follow the suggested paths of the council or you go on your own to do what you wish to. Maybe you dont participate in the pvp fights and more like a pve guy? Go and explore underground areas (dungeons). These type of games may seems overwhelming for the first time with so much freedom, but probably it wont be too hard on you. Just dont expect everything a simple themepark mmo can provide.
God no, I'm sick of theme parks. Stick with the open pvp conflict. It's like 90% TPS Shooter 10% RPG anyway from the Devs own statements.
XThat just doesn't sound fun. What is the point of PvP if there isn't a set goal to fight over. Even PvP needs objectives rather than just see who can get the most kills. I'm not saying we need to go and mine iron , pick flowers or go kill 10 gro but a reason to PvP would be nice rather than war just for the fun of it. (orks and chaos not included in that sentence, they are the opposite )
Hopefully , otherwise I'll probably get bored quickly. Also how will Tyranids be fitted into this PvP only theme? PvPvE sounds more like it.
I go for the fourth option, 1st person shooter like planetside 2, everytime I play that I think how cool it would be if it was in a 40k setting. 3rd person shooter wouldn't be bad but I'd be much happier with 1st person
I have some good news and some bad news: GOOD NEWS! This is a Sandbox MMO without questing, leveling, dungeons, etc- it's not WoW like. BAD NEWS! This is a Sandbox MMO without questing, leveling, dungeons, etc- it's not WoW like. ... er... wait.... But there's more good news- it's a sandbox MMO focused on player-driven, open-world conflict. But we're giving players ways to guide each other and incentivize their allies to attack certain areas. There will also be PvE engagements- underworld dungeons that are procedurally generated (think like Torchlight 2, Diablo 2, and Left 4 Dead), as well as a horde mode pitting your team against escalating waves of Tyranids. So we're a 3rd person shooter MMO with some player-driven operations and some procedural dungeons. Really a mix of the two options!
I'll say this....NO GAWD DAY-YUM QUESTS! When it comes to Warhammer 40,000 The only "Quests" should come from your commander, who is a player NOT an NPC. They will tell you to hold the line, scout or join the assault because it supports your group. Not because it will offer you XP, Loot, Gold, etc. I expect everything to be Player driven, from the combat to the tactical decisions of doing what works for yoru team. That's one of the reasons why I love playing Planet Side 2. There are no quests of the sort, everything in the flow of combat is determined by the Players actions.
