I like crafting. I wouldn't say I am a FIEND for it, but I enjoy it. I wouldn't cry if EC didn't have it, but it is nice. It is particularly nice if you've been fighting for hours and need a break from adrenaline rush combat, but would still like to continue playing the game and do something productive in it. I recognise the concern with having Space Marines and Nobs running around picking things up and tooling with items. These are fairly legitimate concerns. A simple solution would be that it isn't your fighting character that does the crafting, but an attendant. Space Marines, even Chaos Space Marines, often have human attendants. Or it could be a Mechanicum servitor. Orks and Eldar have their own versions. Whatever. In the MMO I play, I have a Retainer. One that I named, chose the appearance of, and control, that sells crafted goods for me on the marketplace. It wouldn't be a substantially dissimilar experience if it was a Retainer type who actually did the crafting. So, picture you play a Night Lord named Malevus Swaggerus. He's the one that you do all your combat and fighting and stuff like that with.... At the same time, once you get to a certain level (crafting might not open until level 10) you then get a retainer. Say you name him Bob. Storywise, Bob is a human engineer that your Night Lord Malevus captured and forced to work for him on the ship. [In Soul Hunter, the Night Lords book, the main character has at least one human servant who was a captive.] So, when you go into crafting mode, you switch from Malevus to Retainer Bob, and it is Bob who does all the tinkering and gathering and what not that you need, which ultimately helps your character. Simple enough.
I for one do not think their is a reason for crafting, only upgrades that can be found, looted, and bought if there is a currency system.... Like this post if you agree or comment
Space Wolves use this tactic to cause disorder in the enemy ranks by sneaking behind enemy locations and turning there own weapons against them (often ordinance, which is a favorite of many Space Wolf Scout units). Beyond that, and very rarely, does a Space Marine have any intention of ever picking up a foes weapon. Let alone actually use it. To do so, at least for most chapters, would result in immediate censure. If the weapon was deemed heretical, such as a demonic weapon of any sort, it is often met with formal execution as they would be deemed corrupted. Perhaps you are referring to the Inquisition, who is often above the law anywise, and is known to use 'extreme' methods often derived of the wicked forms of chaos they presume themselves able to control?
Your a Soldier first. With that you are expected to fight like any Soldier shale. With the exception of the Orks, you are Issued the weapons of your trade and the ammunition to use it. You are issued the armor for your own personal protection where and when needed, and you are given medals to achievements above and beyond the call of duty when it is deserved by you as per a decision in higher standing then yourself. Nowhere is it stated that a Space Marine should work for his ration of ammo, or have an option to 'buy' better ones at a vendor. No where is it that Chaos Space Marine would dare stand in front of a man behind a metal cage, no matter how possessed he or it might seem, to barter for the 'red' demonic helm as opposed to the blue one he now dawns upon his deformed head. No amount of 'grinding' for boar bladders should ever make a potion of righteousness, or how many soul stones will it take to make a rune of annoyance that any Eldar could make. The only thing you should be "grinding" is your chainsword or axe on the head of your foe, surrounded in a sea of a thousand more baying for your blood on a riptide of a seemingly endless battlefield. A small cog in a very big machine. That ever grinding and never stopping machine that rips you up and spits you out in a hailstorm of broken bits and armor but ultimately sends you screaming back for more. For in the Far Future there is ONLY war.
Perhaps it could be collecting so "many" 'nid bit from high level dungeons that "allow" you to craft your award veteran 'nid armor. Yes it is a bit of a stretch but it may work for the crafting and the veteran decorative awards.
I think there should be crafting in a sense. Hammering out weapons? Nah. But upgrading them? Absolutely. Swapping out barrels, mag chamber wells, trigger mechanisms, foregrips - all the gun porn you can do. I do it all the time with my personal firearms.
We just have to change how we tike about crafting. We will not be working a forge or skin 100 boars to make leather armor. We want to get an edge over our enemies even the slightest will help.
well, not crafting as such. I don't know about eldar, but I just don't see a space wolves captain taking a day off from fighting to collect ores, smelt them, shape them into a purity seal of fire rate +1... but completing objectives could yield materiel rewards for your chapter (for you) and allow you to requisition something customized from your friendly neighborhood artificer.
