Hi! New here. And I got some questions. Here's the set up, I've heard some things about Warhammer 40k. Apprently it's grim dark as hell, and that it's well loved by a lot of people. But honestly, I know nothing about all the terms people throw about. But because it sounds interesting to me, I'm curious to learn what it actually is about. So I joined this forum in order to learn about the stuff. It sounds interesting, at least with the grim dark element. But here's my main questions before all else. What type of game is it? I hear the terms tabletop and such thrown around , and that reminds me of how Dungeons and Dragons were described. Sadly, I never played tabletop stuff. So an explanation of how that works would be nice. Is it nihilistic grim dark? Like you know, everyone's fucked grim dark. Because that's fine with me, just want a very specific clarification on the tone. And honestly, since Apprently there is a story from what I gathered, can someone point to where I can get some info on the story of this universe? And that's basically it. Really appreciate it if you explain to me that stuff. But overall, I like grim dark stuff, so I think I'll definitely enjoy it. Just hope I can understand it a bit better soon enough.
Welcome to the forums! Grimdark is a very general term for how much of a crapsack universe/time/situation everyone is in. Billions of deaths every day and a constant war isn't pretty hehe. http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Warhammer_40,000#.VABGArT9VuA http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Warhammer_40k_Wiki These are good places to check if you want to learn about the lore.
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page here you can find all you need read: about the history of Humankind and the war in heaven and the horus heresy. edit: ouch ninjaed
Now, Grimdark is fun, and it gets mentioned here on the forums a lot for sure. But sometimes it makes people forget all the other things that warhammer has to offer. 40k is a huge, huge universe, mostly by virtue of its age (20 years), and thus has qualities that span the entire breadth of what science fiction has to offer. As a personal example, I played 40k for almost 10 years without ever interacting with an Imperium army - we had Eldar, Tau, Tyranids, Necrons, but never the Space Marines and Imperial Guard. So Grimdark has never been important to me personally - my experience with 40k has basically been Ninjas vs Samurai in space (Eldar vs Tau), mixed with some horror/horde elements (Tyranids and Necrons). At its heart, 40k is about strategy and scale. The TableTop, which is a miniature wargame played on a 6x4 terrain table, embodies these qualities. It has more model variation than most other wargames, has a greater variation in their power level (grunts vs tanks vs heroes and monstrous creatures), and you play with a larger number of them - big games of 40k or Apocalypse will use many hundreds of models at once. This transitions naturally into EC, which will be the first game since DOW to have the full scale of the 40k TT as a digital game. People are psyched about the idea of seeing the battles they lived out in TT and DOW "personally", from the perspective of a soldier on the front. Not many games have ever captured the scale of 40k before, and rivals like Planetside lack the weight and power this universe contains. Mix it with a solid leadership system and the asymmetrical balance characteristic of the 40k factions, and this'll be a game to be reckoned with. So yeah, we're pretty excited and hopefully you'll be excited too. Welcome to the forums!
