Please Don't Restrict Yourself To An Over The Shoulder View

Discussion in 'Ask the Team' started by Nuttydread, Nov 17, 2013.

  1. I just wanted to sneak my vote for a third person view that was not over the characters shoulder. I didn't enjoy it in Space Marine release and find it clunky generic and restrictive. I am hoping to see as much of my character and any customization options that we might get to make to them as possible. My fingers are crossed fervently that we will really get to build up our character and be able to see and appreciate it in game . That and a first person view with a good bordered UI design, but the over the shoulder third person view is possibly one of the least appealing.

Thanks for all the work making the game that so may of us have been hungering for.

i'm not sure what they plan on doing view wise, although i'd like to be able to have a 1st person view,
from an immersion stand point, nothing says i'm in the game than seeing what your char sees, with the bionic eye or helmet hud overlaying tac data.

it's not always practical from a strategic viewpoint, but really, a space marine doesn't know what his back looks like, and i don't want it taking up half of my computer screen either

as long as we get an adjustable FoV, I'm good.
but we really do need an adjustable FoV.
    yes, even in third person.

I believe that they do have different camera angles in mind (including 1st person. I think I saw a thread about it in this subforum somewhere.)
You can use the search button to find a thread that talks about it, I believe.
  5. I saw that there was a thread about the possibility of a first person view and that they might try to get that in. But it sounded like it may take some work. I am not against a third rerson view I am happy if we can view our characters like you can in World of Warcraft. It's more being stuck with the over the shoulder view that I am hoping to avoid.

Well, the main reason for the over-the shoulder view in shooters is that the further out of line you get with the gun barrel, the harder it is for the crosshair to represent your target in a way that makes sense.

For example, when you go third-person in World of Tanks, the further you zoom out the more of a problem walls become: let your crosshair move over one and your barrel aims into the sky.

In a related problem, it's hard to look up in third-person view because the camera runs into the ground. The further away you are from the character the worse this is, especially since in order to feel "normal" a third-person view has to be oriented slightly down in the first place. Looking over the shoulder alleviates this, because it gets the camera closer to the character and, more importantly, the character's head. It's basically as close to first-person as a third-person view gets.

That said I understand it has its own awkward moments, especially since the character is offset from the center of the screen. In general I find it easier to move, avoid obstacles, use cover, and shoot in first-person. Third-person can be nice at times for melee and platforming though.
  7. First person would be really cool. Like aephelion said with the bionic eye, the huds would also look really nifty with first person (Or just a changable FOV). One of the main things I worry about for third person is the fact that people can just wait behind corners for some poor sod to come down a hallway then jump out with a melta-gun.

Am I the only one who is confused why you opened up a new thread when you said that there was already one?
Apart from that, third-person view IS what you will want to use to look at your character, because you can see it. You can't really see yourself in first-person without a mirror. And massive melee combat is almost impossible without third-person. Just think about enemies coming up behind you. You can't see 'em, but they'll kill you. While this makes the game a lot more realistic, it's also kinda working against the idea of it.
They also stated (I think it was Nicolas Brunoni) that first-person view might be some kind of "goodie" after launch, if ever.

Why people don't watch the video footage in details and think carefully before state their disappointment? the over shoulder view because they were aiming/zooming with gun, aim = over shoulder, take a look closely to the rest of the vid, you can see the character from toe to horn, if don't want over shoulder, don't aim then, just risk the accuracy.

Some ideas really violate with the others, first person shooting and fancy customization???

And also I hope there will be no first person view or all you will see are faces on the battlefield. How can you feel the thrill of massive battle without third person view?? o_O don't say planetside2, no taste.
  10. since this game is half melee and half shooter i think 3rd person is best

in games like chavalry medivel warfare first person is perfekt, cause you have to aim your blocks to the enemies weapon
but in a game like EC you will not need to aim for a block cause the gameplay is much faster
