"Out of Video Memory"... somehow

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, or if anyone else has had the same problem (forum search turned up nothing), but this is starting to get annoying.

Recently, the game has been telling me that I've "run out of video memory" and then closes the game down. The strange thing is, it was running perfectly fine before now. Heck, I've even tried turning the graphics DOWN to try and combat this (was originally on High), but to no avail, and I'm certainly within the spec boundary for this (Intel i5-Quad Core 3.5Ghz, NVidia GTX 950 and 8GB of RAM).

So what do I need to do to solve this? Reinstall the game? Update my graphics drivers? Maybe buy more RAM (have been struggling with memory usage recently)? Poke around with something else?

    Any help is appreciated.
  2. If it is saying video memory, you don't really need more RAM, although that never hurts. Sounds like you bought a 2gig DDR5 GTX950. 4gig ddr video cards are quickly becoming the standard for newer games.

It is also possible the memory on your vid card is bad, and you aren't getting the full use of it.

I'm not really sure what type of GTX I got, as I had my machine custom built buy a company rather than doing it myself (which in hindsight, was probably a bad idea).

Is there any way to up the amount of video memory, or would I have to change the card? And if the memory on the card is bad, how do I fix it?
  4. It'd be cheaper and better to just buy a new card. To replace memory on a vid card is much more intensive than replacing ram sticks, if they are even bad.

Out of video memory implies your graphics card doesn't have enough memory, even though a GTX 950 meets the minimum 2GB requirement. Is it only EC which creates a problem for you? If so, then the game is problematic which isn't far from believable considering how badly optimized it is.

I have had a few other things cause this problem before, such as Battleborn and Source Filmmaker (the former is because of poor optimisation again, and the latter, I think might be a similar problem).

I figured as much, but I've planning to upgrade the card to a GTX 970 or a 980 Ti so I could do VR stuff with it. I'm gonna need to save my pennies then.

A GTX 1070 would be your best bet for price/performance. The 1070 outperforms the 980 but the 980ti only outperforms the 1070 marginally. 980ti is still a good card but it's the older of available high performance cards. The 1080 obviously blows all of them out the water.

Video memory usage is both dependent on texture quality and resolution. Now, you could just lower the resolution, which would help, but there's a better method.

Go to User\AppData\Local\EternalCrusade\Saved\Config\WindowsClient, and open up GameUserSettings in a word editor of your choice (notepad works fine).

Look for the setting "sg.ResolutionQuality=100.000000". That "100.000000" = 100% of the resolution you have set. You can lower that, ie, "80.000000", to make it 80% of your set resolution. What this does is lower the rendered resolution, while keeping the HUD the same scale as native resolution. So the game gets a bit blurrier, but at least your HUD stays nice and crisp and the proper size.

As a side note, minimum recommended settings generally denotes "With this setup, you'll be able to run the game at 720p 30fps". Kind of an unspoken rule.

I did a bit of research and actually found that, with my current build, I would actually do better with a GTX 1060. Was thinking of going for a 1050, but it doesn't run VR.

@MungFuSensei Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try if it keeps playing up

If u have anything less than 2 GB of VRAM ... Lower down your overall textures quality and resolution ...
