I don't understand, what's wrong with orks. Most people are going to play for stereotypical spacemarines - the most dreary faction of the game. Eldars - haughty race, which lost their empire long ago, but still think that they are exceptional. And orks on the last place. They have funny crazy style, they fight just because they can. What's wrong with them?
Space Marines are and always have been the poster boys of 40K. I spoke to a store manager at Warhammer World months ago and he said around 55.3% of his total sales are Marines. In TT terms they have the largest model count, largest vanilla codex, many SM derrived codicies (Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Iron Hands, Space Wolves, Imperial Fists), and of course are the centre of most 40K PC games. They're going to be popular no matter what, they steal the limelight. Orks are going to be the FTP race, and will be the race populated with the largest amount of idiots as a result, Free to Play is an ugly term these days.
But it kinda fits, doesn't it? I mean, having hordes of idiots playing orks seems like the perfect fit to me.

I don't think it's actually possible to predict which race is going to be the most populous at this juncture. In the first instance, while Space Marines are popular on TT, will that carry over to video game? The only game/series of which had a choice between the different factions was Dawn of War and Space Marines were not the most popular faction in that game (Twas Eldar, IIRC.). Orks may not be as popular as Space Marines in TT, but they are at least second place in that regard. Most TT tournaments have at least one player using Orks and getting the old Orky chants going. In video game terms, they have a couple of things in their favour. (1) The popularity of Gorgutz'Ead'Unter in DoW, (2) They're the main race (alongside Dark Angels) in the most recent 40k game to be released (Storm of Vengeance) and (3) They'll be in the starting lineup of Warhammer 40k: Regicide. Eldar were rediculously popular in DoW, to the point where there were calls to nerf them every expansion (http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Dawn_of_Eldar). Not only that, but they've been involved in the two most successful 40k series of novels in some form or another (Ravenor and Caiphas Cain). Chaos is well known for it's contribution to meme culture from Dawn of War (with *ahem* METAL BAWKSES *ahem*), it was the main enemy in Space Marine and a multiplayer race in said game. Combine that with the success of the Horus Heresy series and the exposure given by Fantasy Flight Games (with Horus Heresy and Dark Heresy) and they could be strong competitors, with the Marines, on their own. All this is moot though, as we all know Chaos will turn on the Orks while the gettings good.
