In the live stream there was View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASJUABt2s3g#t=3365 a pic of the burna/ork plasma gun concept art, and I thought that was really really cool. The problem with it being just the ork plasma gun having this mechanic of an on-death detriment to the team is that its inconsistent and allows the enemy to focus priority to specific orks and may cause players using it to feel like they're dying too quickly. I think the solution to this problem isn't less on-death-mechanics...but more. I think orks fighting with dangerous weapons and Orks dying should be a core mechanic for orks. An ork gets shot? His shoota fires off as he spasms on the ground and dies, firing in a cone direction. An Ork with a burna gets shot? Well did they blow up? No? Ok the bullet hole spews flame. Constant aoe threat of team-damage is something that would allow ALL Ork players to consistently keep a focus on thinking about what happens if their fellow ork dies and harms them instead of a one-off where you focus on your burna's and scold them for failing to think about the team. Creating this mechanic would be novel and create a novel new way to experience a fps/third person shooter, and make a clear distinction between orks and other races. In these large scale battle games death is constant, and always painful no matter what, by creating a mechanic that creates new tactical problems around death, you create a new way to experience the battlefield. ./dream
So what you are saying playing Orks should be not about skill or tactics; but more about getting a bunch of them onto a battlefield just to see what happens? Wait isn't that what happens with Orks anyway? Preferably watching them while eating popcorn?
I don't think it removes skill from the equation. I just think it adds another obstacle to JUST winning with sheer mass. As well as making Orks Orkier B)
I think orks will have enough problems dealing with enemies firing AOE at them, with the added problems of your friends blowing you up I don't think an ork horde would ever get anywhere. Plus you're then sending a mixed message: As an ork, you should group up with your friends and fellow greenskins for a wagggghh bonus! ...except don't, because you'll blow each other up in a massive domino effect of burnas and grenades going off. So no, I can't agree. Against nids or someother NPC race it's a good idea, the AI will hardly complain when a pyrovore blows up 30+ gaunts. Yet I would ragemode if I got blown up just because I followed a nob with a burna.
Greatly mitigate/decrease friendly fire from accidental weapon fire due to holes in the fuel tank/ firing off a few rounds after death and im pretty sure everything would be fine. It'd be hilarious to see a player with a punctured melta tank running around in panic. But in a tactical note, if you're able to move just for barely 2-3 seconds when the tank is punctured, it'd encourage that Ork Burna boy to do a suicide run at the enemy before his tank blows up.
But we want more people, and we want orks to get bonuses for grouping up into hordes. I don't know about you but I think it'll piss the free to waaagh-er's off, something which EC can't really afford.
Having a draw back and a bonus for there being more orks in an area isn't a problem for either concept.
instead of getting dmged the orks should just get knocked away/down when a friendly fuel tank blows up would look very orky if there is a big explosion inside a troop of 20 orks and all get scattered in the surrounding and slowly getting up just to charge at the enemy again same could go for friendly aoe weapons cause I imagine the rokkit lancha is quiet inaccurate and might hit many mates so instead of DMG they should receive CC it would be still in favour of the enemy but it would be more orky since they don't have to care to much for their mates
