That's a lie. They once killed a hormaguant in melee it was unupgraded though and it took out half the squad.
Well Tau may not be trained so much in melee but they are trained together and form a strong bond with their squadmates and are far more disciplined, while orks snipers are well orks who suck at shooting probably stuggle against urges to kill eachother and obviously as snipers don't go in hand to hand combat as often as other orks so id say tau would hold their own my people for the greater good.
With all due respect, even Ork who has never ever seen melee combat (and this is about as likely to happen as the Emperor springing back to life and revealing that he actually was Marry Poppins all along) is still larger, tougher, and meaner than a fire warrior. For hells sake, a Grot could take down a fire warrior in melee if the little gits weren't such cowards.
Orks always love a hand to hand fight. Even if they're always regimented to sniper spots, they would still take any opportunity for the enemy to come get them in melee. They'd probably be shouting their positions the entire time, hoping the enemy would get close enough to engage in melee combat so they could do some REAL damage. Also, Orks don't fight each other when there's another thing to fight. They only fight each other when they're bored, which is when they've finished krumpin' whoever else was around.
I voted Orks. I figured they would just get pissed off when they miss and rush the tau. ork v tau melee there is only one winner.
I'm getting visions of a squad of orks, all holding sniper rifles at the wrong end of the barrel like they're baseball bats, smacking the shit out of the tau. And it's hilarious.
Ork sniper pulls the trigger, it fires one shot. Confused, he pulls the trigger again, and it only fires one shot. He fumbles with the sight and, noticing that it isn't another weapon barrel, gets pissed. "Dis fing ain't shooty enough!" he yells, and he and his fellow Ork snipers charge in to give the Tau melee units a proper beating.
