Yo, don't want people to miss this comment. In EvE online with massive game world, basically empty ( I mean not that many game objects, comparing to other MMO games.) we experienced massive lags, how are u going to solve this?

    Hi,
So you've probably already answered this in another thread (this one's kinda at the top and I'm working down), but, How do you plan to combat Overcrowding?

If you are running a "One world, One server" set-up the home or "root" towns that players will cluster in will get heavily swarmed with players. And if the players are considered solid objects for moving I can see people not getting anywhere fast.

In games like WoW they have players split into realms. But even then the amount of people sitting in the root towns (Stormwind or Ogrimar) was quite high on some servers. Though they allowed players to move through each other to get by this (or they were lazy). It does destroy the realism a little but it works better for that games mechanics.

My main concern is logging in to a game and seeing 50 space marines dancing (on a mailbox?) by the auction house and not being able to get by. Or the infamous "HABBO" raids of 4-Chan where players deliberately block off areas with their characters spoiling the game for others.
  3. first of all we are going to have friendly fire and reporting systems ;) if players behave wrong and hinder other players from enjoying the game, they will have to live with the consequences!

apart from that - the home base of players is in space on a space ship - which ofc is instanced, so everyone is having a space where there can't be overcrowding.

in battle areas, blocking each other is actually something that we consider being used for tactics - but maybe this question is also something that Brent could answer!
    Dagda and Revenlear like this.
  4. Look at EVE Online. Single shard universe. This kind of single server world wide is very very possible, we just need to drop a whole wackton of money into hardware to be able to make it possible. As long as the servers are able to handle their own areas without too much stress I think we should be fine. If battles start getting up to 200-400+ soldiers on the battlefield, we might hit some problems.

from what i can gather about pikko server, it seems to me that they will have several servers, each able to handle a certain amount of players . normally these servers would be spreading their processing power acrosss several zones, however if one zone has 20x more players than the others, the servers might relocate most of their power to handling that zone. this is different from most server technologies, where either one large server covers everything and it just gets horribly bogged down by way too many players(forcing COSTLY server upgrades), or there is a server per zone or large area (think azerothvs kalimdorvs outland), these servers do not help eachother out, and if a server goes down, the zone that server is covering becomes unavailable.

pikkoserver has a lot of really nice things about it, for instance, if they see that the servers cant quite handle the number of players, they can add one or a few small servers to help manage the load, instead of being forced to upgrade to a much larger server like most other game publishers have to do.

What I don't want is people abusing the reporting system. So my question here is how are you going to combat people abusing the report system? I don't want someone who dislikes me for no reason to report me for nothing I have done.

generally speaking, they will have logs, and when a report gets sent to them, they will look over the logs and decide on the proper course of action. if youve done nothing wrong, they will probably just ignore the report

This is a great advancement in the MMO Server department. If E.C. is going to have this, or something similar to Pikko then I'm confident they'll achieve their goal of putting everyone on ONE server. More games may end up doing this as well.
  10. haha yes, we have already announced this, MuchDifferent is our partner in crime! Cheers!
