One Character - Any Class

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Putrefaction, Nov 23, 2014.

  1. AFAIK, they've said with new factions everyone will get a free char slot. With new subfactions, you will get the option to re-roll your (eg) SM from DA to BT.

That's not how it works ^^ You get 4 character slots for the game. Unless you buy more. AFAIK you can have various loadouts per character, but new characters will cost money.

I don't have an issue with the character cap personally. You are limited in experiencing all the added content for each of the 20 Sub-Faction and having multiple specs of the same class I guess. Not really goals I had foreseen myself pursuing.

I do hope BHVR let us buy additional slots with in-game earned RTP though. I'd be happier if the store used a single currency and there wasn't a dual system of RTP & actual money ($/£/€ etc).
  3. They did say they're going to do that once they get the shop actually set up with a checkout.

    looks like this topic has been pretty much put to bed, but I just wanted to add that, in addition to Miguels "Be an elite soldier of the 41st Millenium", we should probably keep in mind Games Workshop's very own introduction into their Grimdark universe;

"But the universe is a big place and, whatever happens, you will not be missed".

  6. They've said that's what they're thinking/hoping for at the moment, as forcing people to buy a new slot or delete an existing character for a new race isn't going to be appreciated by players. The hope is to fund the creation of the extra races by other monetisation mechanics as we go along.

However, it will likely depend on the success of other monetisation mechanics as to whether they can definitely stick to this, or if they do need to rely on the character slot purchases when the time comes. Way too early to say at the moment. I'd assume the worst, then you can be pleasantly surprised later (or just vindicated, like Curze).

On the 4 char point, it's worth pointing out that this gives you full access to all classes of one sub-faction of each race. Or all four sub-factions of a single race. Which is likely to work fine for the vast majority of people. If you're not at all bothered by one of the races (for example, it's very unlikely I'll roll SM after this many years fighting the Imperium), you effectively get a free slot to use for a second sub-faction of one race, or hold in your back pocket for an additional race further down the line.

Whilst I appreciate this must have been an unpleasant surprise for cupcakeunleashed, I think it's actually quite a reasonable stance. The only thing I'd like to see, ultimately, is new character slots being unlockable via RTP as well as outright purchases, so it's possible to use in-game time played to avoid it feeling like a mandatory fine on anyone who just HAS to play every sub-faction. ;)
  7. ...unless you give your opponent 20 dice all loaded to roll 1s at the start of his turn. *whistles innocently*

Sounds like you wanted a more traditional MMORPG class system, Putrefaction, but even in those games people will level up multiple characters to basically fulfill the same purpose: to be able to switch to a different archetype when the need arises. Doesn't that slightly cheapen their name and reputation too, if you know their tank is called Jeff, their healer is called Rezpls and their DPS is called Blamethehealer? At least in this system, you may switch between classes while maintaining progression under one name, so you don't need to go through the hassle of re-leveling through the same stuff just to access a different endgame skillset.

I love games that provide the sort of character attachment and building you're talking about, and it's something I think PvP MMOs in particular benefit from; being able to develop rivalries, calling out friends and foes, changing your tactics based not only upon what kind of enemy you see but who that enemy happens to be. Getting to know your enemies almost as well as your friends.

But I feel like you're drawing the line too strongly between that 'one character/class' rule and that sense of community. People learn to care when your name keeps flashing up under the 'You were killed by' tab. They care when they see your guild's colours painted on the tank column driving towards a battlefield, and they actually recognise them, thinking 'By the Emperor's holy balls, it's these guys again...' What gun you used or what armour you were wearing doesn't matter so much.

You forge your own legend in games just by being yourself consistently, although being wicked-sick at the game itself doesn't hurt either. I believe that, even though our characters die constantly and may change classes, you're still dragging that character name of yours through every glorious victory, crushing defeat, unlock, sad death from environmental hazards and balance change that will inevitably occur on Arkhona. You can still make your experience as immersive and personal as you want: it's just that the limitations you wished for aren't forcibly applied across the board here.

I'm no stranger to playing with self-imposed handicaps for the sake of my own immersion: my WoW priest never cast a Shadow spell in his entire career.

That's why I can overlook some of the inconsistencies or lack of restrictions that arise thanks to this being a game. But however you choose to play, I know that when I rock up onto the battlefield I want enemies (and hopefully not friends) to think 'Oh ****, not this guy again...' because it's me, the biggest, baddest mothercorruptor on the Chaos side.

And I believe that that is pretty ****ing Warhammer.

  9. I understand what you're saying SpiritofRock and that does seem to be the consensus as far as this thread and this system is concerned.

I could live with players having different characters stuck as one class, that wouldn't break the immersion for me at least not on the same level playing any and all classes with one character does. Those characters would all have different names, be locked as different classes and each do their own thing as they would if it was simply another player.

I will concede that I'm looking at the glass half empty as opposed to half full, a lot of these things I want are still there even if they aren't on par with how I'd want them. I just had this vision for a single class character system, something I'm not sure has been done on this scale before, if it has I'm not aware of it. I'm just having a hard time letting go of that vision.

I can respect that... but I put it to you that when we hop out of a rhino and gun down some loyalist dogs, the sheer bloody thrill should ease the pain of your disappointment. Although it's a fairly long wait.
