On Balance (Sort Of)

TL;DR - Let's not chase new players away from the game by abusing the blatantly broken things to no end.

So it's become readily apparent from the last patch that this community has had a bit of a communication problem for, well, maybe forever. If you look objectively at the current live patch, it's pretty easy to call out a few things as just this side of "too good". The Shuriken Cannon is great at every range, even while moving, and does tremendous damage. I don't think anyone would dispute that the Power Fist is currently bumjumped, to turn a phrase. There's zero reason to take anything but a Plasma Rifle as a Tactical right now. The Plasma Cannon is doing its job, one-shotting people from range at a full charge, but it might be able to do it a little too reliably.

But these are to be expected, the game is still receiving balance passes in every patch (and will for the rest of its life, whatever that may be), it's expected that things will be too good, or essentially worthless. I think though, when people come on and make 50+ page threads about the balance of a certain weapon, the problem that's occurring in the game isn't one of balance, it's one of willpower. People just aren't able to keep their hand out of the cookie jar. Marine matches with either faction turn into teams of almost nothing but plasma, fists and apothecaries/sorcerers. Matches with Eldar often end up with an ever-scrolling kill list and Reapers with dozens of kills to single digit deaths. No-one wants to not use the stuff that makes it easy for them to do well. An age old human problem.

And I don't know that's it's fixable, aside from the devs getting the final balance in place at the launch of the game, but I just thought I'd post this and ask, you know, maybe cut it out. If new people buy the game and their first experience is getting camped by a plasma cannon every time they spawn, or making a bad tactical decision and dying before they can even register the enemy is there, it could be fairly damaging to player retention.
  2. I understand what you are saying, but I don't think it's a realistic request, especially because not everyone checks the forums.

Even if everyone agreed to not use the cheese, it would be artificially deflating the numbers on the devs' metrics for those cheesy weapons that need to be tuned. The best way to get an OP weapon nerfed is to use it a lot. e.g. Mark of Nurgle (not a weapon, but same idea) and multi-melta.

I don't like any of the weapons that you mentioned as being the cheese of the month, and I will continue not using them.

That's actually a fairly salient point. A depressing one, but totally in the right. Oh well, disregard this thread I guess.

Is this where some horrible person needs to start saying Git gud and L2p?
  5. I think rather than that, we should make new players aware of the OP weapons.

If everyone just uses a Plasmagun/Darkreaper/Powerfist, or whatever is the OP thing of the Patch, then you mostly have an enjoyable game on a fair playingfield.

So next time you see someome with a bolter and no Kills, help him out.
