I don't know if you guys have started talking about it much yet, but I understand you wanted to keep the UI pretty similar to Relic's Space Marine, so my question is how would you be implementing the chat box which is used to communicate in like every PC game? The main reason i ask is because with MMO's starting to come to consoles (like Planetside 2, DC Universe Online, Elder Scrolls Online), if Eternal Crusade does come to Xbox One and PS4, how would you implement a way for players to communicate with each other when they don't have keyboards, but would still be able to communicate between squad, guild, etc? I for one think that game-wide or even radius-defined player distance (where only players within certain distances of each other) would get really annoying due to the amount of people that could potentially be shouting at once. And as far as I know, the other games like Planetside 2 and ESO haven't actually showed how they're going to be doing player communication on consoles. Thanks!
We will need to see which communication tools Consoles will have: For sure mics, maybe keyboard or mini clip-on keyboards on controller, etc. Anyway, we will have the Voice Chat system which is accessible through a menu - so you'll be able to have your character shout pre-recorded lines. The Chat box will keep track of them so it will feel as a constructed chat too.
Thanks for the reply. I actually really like this idea. I think voice chat would work best if it was radius and squad based, and then maybe the squad leaders would be able to have a chat that works with their squad and the other squad leaders, and then the larger commanders can talk to everyone, and so on.
Yes - we need to decide how we do Chat Channels (limit it to leaders, etc.). In the end, I want you guys spending more time fighting than pausing to chat Multiple channels to keep track of on the field is somewhat distracting too. Strike Teams and Chapters will have tools to set up goals and objectives for their members, they should use these tools to communicate their strategies while on the battlefield instead of chatting. Chat should be secondary, more useful when planning and socializing out of the battlefield. What do you think guys?
Agree with everything you said, but it would be nice to have /say chat for anyone that wants to randomly talk to anyone else out in the field.
The way PlanetSide2 does this is: (for voice/text chat) Local (Voice & Text) - people nearby Regional (text only) - friendly people in current base Squad (V&T) - people in your squad Platoon (V&T) - people in squads, in the platoon Clan (V&T) - everybody in your clan Leader (V&T) - squad leaders I don't necessarily agree with all of these, but it is a good example to start with.
