Oh that's pretty cool to hear. I'm pretty used to Devs being completely ignorant of what happens on their forums, so this is good news :)

I'm only familiar with a few of those, I really need to brush up on my 40k knowledge :p

btw Cadians were the primary regiment used in the DoW games right?

Yeah it's really easy to get carried away with this stuff, but please keep the ideas coming you guys! If the Devs really do check the forums then this might be of use to them later on :)

Yeah, Cadians are basically your generic green-armored Guardsmen with the Starship Troopers helmets.

Here's a ludicrously long list of, as far as I know, every regiment that's ever been mentioned in every piece of 40k writing ever: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Regiments_of_the_Imperial_Guard#.UpA-Z-JE3ug

This is a shorter list of relatively well-known regiments, with pictures: http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Imperial_Guard_Regiments

These are the ones that you'll generally be able to distinguish on tabletop at a glance, because GW (or sometimes just Forge World) actually makes models for them:
Some of them, like Krieg and Elysians, have their own modified army lists and special rules.

It's actually kinda sad that Cadians are frequently thought of as the regular guys who soil their pants the second they see a demon, when in fact the Cadians are probably one of the most battle-hardened human populations in the entire galaxy. Living right next to the Eye of Terror does that kind of thing to you.

Agreed. Cadians are cool, they fight Chaos Space Marines, they're not pushovers.

I seem to have forgotten that Death Korps of Krieg is not Armaggedon Steel Legion. Either way, they are similar in uniform. I don't think Elysian Drop Troops will be an option, they are leaning away from air vehicles.

What could happen as well, is a regiment themed around each zone in the game. There is going to be desert, snow, temperate, etc. so they could implement Tallarn, Vostroyan or Valhalla, Cadian or Catachan, etc.

Imperial Guard was the only faction that ever interested me enough to actually buy table top soldiers, though I only have a few; they're Cadian.

These lore arguments get extremely tiresome. There are specific cases in the lore in which guard are extremely weak, though this is usually used as an offset so as to over-exaggerate the strength of the Space Marines. Far more telling is the fact that, in the lore, IG are facing off against Orkz everyday while being sizably outnumbered, and often they are still winning. Yes, an Ork Boy should be able to take more punishment than a guardsman. Yes, an Ork Boy should handily beat a guardsman if he gets in melee. In spite of this, the lore strongly implies that on a unit by unit basis basic IG units can fight and beat basic Ork units. Were this not true the Imperium would have been overrun generations ago. There simply aren't enough SMs to fight every war, and if the IG were strictly worse on a 1v1 basis, while being outnumbered, then the Imperium would fall. It's just basic logic.

It seems pretty simple to me, the basic guardsman is a F2P character, and is balanced against the F2P Ork Boy. Squishier and worse in melee, but higher range and greater accuracy. The P2P options are something like Sergeants, Commissars, Ogryn, Kasrkin, Ratling Snipers. They still won't be as robust as Ork Nobs or SMs, but I expect the Eldar to be in a similar boat, and as such have other advantages that make them attractive.

As it is SMs/CSMs are more problematic from a lore perspective than IG. SMs should be stronger overall than comparable races units, as they are frequently depicted as being hugely outnumbered but still winning, but for balance reasons likely won't be. Yes they'll have advantages, but from a lore perspective a SM should be strictly superior to a Nob, when for gameplay purposes they are going to be asymmetrically balanced against each other. Similarly SMs/CSMs cannot fit into a years long campaign in which they are dying by the thousands on a daily basis. There simply aren't that many of them. Somethings have to be let go for gameplay purposes. I don't see why guardsmen dying in a single shot specifically needs to be preserved. They can be squishier without being a one hit kill.

The biggest lore issue is having Guardsmen fight against SMs, but considering its done on the tabletop and has been done in DoW I can't say it concerns me. They just need a good story to justify it.
  7. The Death Korps focus more on siege and trench warfare whilst the Steel Legion focus on mechanized warfare.

I'm still fairly sure that when IG do roll into the game it will be a Cadian-ish if not Cadian Imperial guard/ vanilla guard for a MMO guard you would need as many doors open to help with balance and game mechanics etc. that when you start to introduce specialised versions you can box yourself in from a translation of the the game POV.
  9. Yeah that's what i imagine will happen. But it will be cool to change the colours and emblems of your regiment.

  10. Not possible, All factions will have 4 subfactions so Chapters/Warbands/Tribes/Craftworlds so far.

You can customize within that but you won't for example have a Green Ultramarine.
