Pretty much all that happened in 30k. As the name suggests 40k is set in the present time of 40,000 ad. In theory it can be thought to take place in our world, meaning much of the laws of physics and such are the same and human history up to our irl present went in 40k as they have gone irl. There is however one major difference in the universe on an a metaphysical level. You see, in 40k there exists a reality parallel to the materium/realspace (the reality in which humanity and other creatures exist,) this is called "the warp" and all the emotions of conscious creatures in realspace emerge in the warp as living creatures living in this realm completely independently. Four major emotions of the different species in 40k have in past history (that's not really correct since time doesn't apply to the warp in a way that we could understand, so everything in the warp has, in a way, always existed) created the four gods of chaos which many worship. Nurgle, the god of pestilence, survival, life and death, the will to live and most importantly the fear of death, is of course the oldest of the gods. Khorne, the god of hatred, rage, bloodlust and violence was created during humanity's medieval age. Tzeentch, the god of hope, change, sorcery and schemes was born during humanity's renaissance. And Slaanesh, the god of excess, lust and unhealthy hedonism was born from the huge orgyfest that was the golden age of the Eldar. (The Eldar are one of many alien or "xenos" species who inhabit the universe alongside humanity.) The gods of chaos are assholes and try to rape humanity at every opportunity. The chaos space marines are corruptes space marines who worship one or all of the chaos gods. The Eldar are space elves who, like the orks, were created by "the old ones," their empire has collapsed a long time ago and now barely cling to life. The orks, like I wrote, also created by the old ones are conscious fungi who live to fight. They're quite succesful in this war-torn universe. The Space marines are the elite super soldiers of the imperium of man, the only real government that has a hope of keeping humanity alive in the bloodthirsty universe of 40k. They are the angels of death to the emperor of mankind, who is worshipped as a god by untold billions. 40k is not a pleasant universe, everything is grimdark and terrible, including humanity. Read up on the several wikis found online, the world has existed for quite a while and the lore has been built on for many many years, so it's quite deep. If you wanna know the "pre-history" the old ones are a good place to start.
Let's face it people would do anything for Eldar Swimwear monthly. I remember seeing within the Warp that before the fall they had a weekly version...
