No problem there, first borrow or buy (ebay) the big rule book (brb) then look at the armies, get a codex of an army you like, then you will see after looking at it there are certain ways to use units, buy units that according to the codex says is good
What I have noticed is that there's always a surprising amount of people around who know the game. But if you really can't find even a store that sells them (much less has gaming tables), I would strongly suggest picking up a buddy and trying to introduce them too. Not to force them in or anything (some people want to save money for something, for whatever reasons...) but the hobby can be there just as well with only two people, and you don't need a gaming club to play the game. A kitchen table can easily be made into a battlefield, and is a thing that happens worldwide all the time to play 40k (and other similar TT-games, ofc, but 40k probably the most).
If you don't mind dropping the money, battleforces are great for the money. I actually didn't get to play for quite a while when I was building my first army. I just liked painting them. I did get started with a friend though, and we got more people in later on.
Once I get around to working on them a little more, I'll post where my vanguard veterans are at right now. Somehow I lost a lightning claw for one guy so I'm trying to find the damn thing.
Your knowledge starts to build up a little bit. My group and I are still pretty new but we remember a lot of stuff. So I'm definitely making a Sentinels of Terra detachment for my Raven Guard. Not sure if I'll take Lysander since my group shies away from named characters but the space marine captain model comes with a sword.
I've been accumulating art supplies and tools here and there over the last few months, gearing up to start on my first batch of miniatures. I've gone all out the last few days, ordering an airbrush, generator(California Air Tools 6310), and all the other bells and whistles associated with miniatures. I should be starting in on my first batch of Death Korps of Krieg in a few weeks. I used to model when I was a kid up to when I was about 15, but it's been 30 years since I've touched a brush(other than an art class in college). I can't wait to knock off the rust and get started. There are no TT groups in my area, but I really dont care at this point. I'm stoked at the idea of painting again. If anyone that's into TT is in the Oklahoma City area, and doesnt mind putting up with a TT newbie, PM me.
Deathkorps is a very nice choice, hope you'll get fast into painting again, because they look at least 50% better with rust and dirt effects Ne sure to post some pictures!
I've been watching you tube tutorials for days on end. The Miniature Painting 101 series is priceless. There's so much to learn and watch and then I get sidetracked constantly with the suggested videos list... I dont really get into the "fresh off the factory floor" look I've seen on many of the miniatures, I prefer the weathered, gritty look, with paint scrapes, bullet holes, dirt/mud on the boots, so I plan on learning and applying the proper techniques to get my guys looking like they've been through hell and back.
