I'm going to assume you did not read anything about the events or characters prior to asking this question. The Sapphire King is a Slaaneshi daemon formed out of Ferrus Manus' emotions when he died, a monumental bitch-slap to the fans of the first Primarch to tell the traitors to eat a revved chainsword with a pinch of napalm. This daemon fed not on emotions but on the Iron Hand's suppression of them, and it influenced the Iron Hands' actions into discarding them more and more. The Gaudinian Heresy started with the Iron ASSHOLE Father Kristos, who was the ultimate justification of why the Iron Hands deserved a good and proper purge, he was your stereotypical Iron Hand, with a burning fetish for bionics, disgust over mankind/weakness (abandoning allies at the drop of a hat) and hatred for the Salamanders and Raven Guard, which result in the Battle for Columnus, where he allowed not only the Raven Guard task-force to die for shits and giggles, he also destroyed their wargear and gene-seed with the heavy use of flamers. It was this last even that started a schism between the more asshole-ish Iron Hands, now dubbed Kristosians, and the more moderate Iron Hands like Kardan Stronos. The heresy proper started in the world of Gaudinia Prime which was under control of the Sapphire King and his Emperor's Children warband. They entered a giant dome and were met with beautiful and perfect machines made of iron and flesh, rubber and tendons and other gruesome comparisons. Kristos fell in love with this fusion of man and machine that he himself attempted to mate with one, which transformed him into a hybrid of iron and flesh along with his followers. The survivors were then attacked by Chaos Space Marines as well as daemons that poured from the hybrids and were going to lose until they figured out that daemons (who were beings of pure emotion) could only be defeated by unleashing their pent-up emotions and rage at them, which gave readers who survived this mess of a book multiple, simultaneous and devastating brain aneurysms.
