on 4chans site at the bottom it did express the belief that a rework of the oldcron fluff could of been achieved very easily without the slash and burn approach Matt Ward took in creating his newcron fluff by basically ignoring the basic premises behind the old fluff,

its a shame it happened the way it did, but a good thing that it happened at all....lol

This doesn't preclude them being an NPC race first. Nor does it mean that GW can't say "No." Bottom line, it's not completely in Behaviour's hands.

They still fit exceptionally well as an NPC PVE race and I hope they end up as one even if players eventually get to play them.

    Not this bull point again.

The Eldar thing works for 1 simple blood fact THATS HOW THEY STARTED OFF its not near 100% rework at a much later date.

There would be a massive S storm if all out of the blue next year the space marines lore was all changed making them 5ft tall dwarfs who was not longer the elite of the elite but now drunk dwarfs under the control of the IG.

The old Necron lore needed some work there is no question there but the rework is silly now the mystery is gone and there nothing like how they was when people got in to them its a giant slap in the face to more or less full rework the race.

So wait, if they start out as High Elves in spaces, it's ok? But if they go from Vampire Counts in space to Tomb Kings in space it isn't?
This just shows how pointless and specious that argument is. Instead of criticizing the actual content of the changes, it focuses entirely on the fact that there were any changes at all, aka the BIG SATAN of retcon.

Sometimes retcons are necessary and good. And in the case of Necrons, it most definitely was necessary and relatively well done.

The C'tan Star Vampires of the old codex were an epic mess. Both in terms of lore consistency and it's translation onto the tabletop.
I already mentioned how the whole slavery to the C'tan and their motivation of consuming all life in the galaxy were a rip-off of the Tyranids. Then there were all the contradicting reasons for them going to sleep. And to top it off the Necron army could actually field a being that was supposed to be on par in power with a Chaos God (queue all the fig leaf excuses that they "just woke up").

The only logical step was to give the Necrons their independence by rebelling. And the massive undertaking that this was, is the perfect reason for them to go dormant. So lore wise the change was not only logical but also elegant.

And yes, especially the Necron HQ characters are pretty weakly designed, but compared to the overall sensible direction the lore took, these are minor issues.

Bottom line: The Necrons lost some of their mystery and thus some of their horror (which was directly related to the lack of information). In exchange we got plenty of information with which we can actually craft a background for our army. And a lot of lore inconsistencies were replaced with a reasonable backstory.

It was a trade-off: mystery vs information. And they decided in favor of Necron players and not their opponents - as they should, since the Necron players are actually buying and playing the army.
Also, I don't know of many Necron-mains that felt "slapped in the face" by a new codex that actually gave them something to work with.

Oh and Space Marines are Warrior Priests of Sigmar... in space.

  6. The idea of playing as a necron lord is very appealing, or a cryptek, or a lychguard, or even an immortal which have a certain degree of autonomy. Perhaps necron lords could be a summoner type clas e.g. summoning warriors and such. p.s. how awesome would it be to cruise in a monolith?

Necron Lords will definitively not be a base class. As a hero class it should be possible though.
  8. The game hasn't even been released yet, I don't see why people are already hoping for a huge swathe of additional factions, (IG, Tau, 'crons, SoB) and every single chapter that is their favourite from SM, CSM legion etc.

Or rather I do see exactly why because obviously everyone wants their favourite races represented.
My only problem with that is, it makes it too crowded, especially when there is only one planet.
If they said ok, we are going to move the crusade onwards to a new world, and then change Tyranids as PvE to Necrons, then that would be fantastic. Easy way of changing pace to the game and adding a whole bunch of new features, totally changes how PvE works while keeping similar elements. (From purge the hive of the xenos filth, to purge the tomb of the xenos filth).

I'd prefer the game to be as minimal as possible, too many factions means too much to deal with, and you have to make up a bunch of reasons why all of the races happen to have somehow arrived on the planet.
Remember the Eye of Terror campaigns and Fall of Medusa where everyone obviously has to be represented, yeah it was fun but it seemed almost a little tacky and forced.

That being said, what would be a great implementation would be the weekly reports similar to what we got from those campaigns, which told us who had the upper hand on Arkhona, with some cool stories about individuals and guilds who were doing well for their faction.

  9. I honestly think it is just plain silly to sacrifice another race to PvE when the Dev's have said numerous times that this is a PvP centered game. While it may turn out that the Tyranids could get boring to fight against, it would be even more boring to limit the amount of different player controlled enemies you could face, as players are infinitely more fun and unpredictable to play against than NPC's (in my opinion).

The Necrons make perfect sense to be a playable race as from Immortals up they have their own minds and sentience, unlike the Tyranids who are all one Hive-Mind. Hell you could justify playing as even Warriors, Wraith and Syders if you just used the excuse that their AI is so good that it seems like they have sentience.

I simply would not be able to express my disappointment if Necrons were forced to be a PvE race like the Tyranids. To have one of the most advanced and oldest races in the 40k universe reduced to being cannon fodder on the battlefield for the other races would awful and I would rather they not be in the game at all if that was the case.

Honestly, I think Necrons would do just fine as a playable race. Their motorpool would be a bit anemic, but their incredibly strong infantry easily make up for it (bloody Gauss Rifles).

Their ability to self-recover, allowing the deceased Necron and his allies to keep on resurrecting (with the help of KYOJI!) could be countered by their lack of a basic medic class (Tomb Spiders aren't basic) and their slightly lower armor (4+, on par with Tau and some IG).
