theres plenty of alien monsters and minor 40K races that could be used as PvE NPC's without the lowering of another TT PC race into NPC status (the lose of the Tyranids to NPC only status was bad enough), such things as Slann Hrud Rak'ghol Mukaali Tarellians Galgs Saruthi Gykon Barghesi and those are just the intelligent ones capable of space travel...any number of lower sentience "creatures" could be employed as NPC's
The numbers may be rough, but they are fact. This is going to be first and foremost a PVP game. There are plenty of PVP ways to "keep a faction in check". Tyranids alone offer huge potential. They have so many different units to choose from. And no. Necrons make no sense as a PVE faction. They make about as much sense as PVE as Tau do. Looking at everything the 40k universe has to offer, there are plenty of other races that make more sense as PVE. Just look at the list Tarl posted above. I could add several more and then there are all the non-sentient beasts that inhabit the galaxy. Even from the existing codexes there are factions that make MUCH more sense as PVE. Take Chaos Daemons for example. They are so alien and chaotic, there is no way a player could play them. Even the IG are more suited to be a PVE faction, since they rely on overwhelming "fodder" tactics. Also, if Behaviour said they will be a PVP faction, they will be a PVP faction. I don't see why this even is an issue.
I agree with Cronty, Necrons should not be PVE faction. Maybe to introduce them to the new player, and the one that are new to the IP to show them in Action. But in the end the Necrons should be a PVP faction. The Troop listing from Cronty was very good. I like to add, that Warriors with scarabs could be the NPCs to defend capturet objectives. Maybe Spiders can be seen at Facilitys changing some bits, to extract some usefull rescourses
That's a good idea, necrons are COMPLETELY opposite to tyranids and would fit really good in this war-torn world.
I agree. And the lack of knowledge about them is extreme, even in this forum among supposedly long time 40k fans. Just goes to show how much they are needed as a playable faction. Yeah, all the Canoptek robots would be ideal for faction NPCs. Like servitors and servo-skulls in the empire.
Happy to be proven wrong on the necrons!! Especially if there are new rules which make them better and more accessible. I will totally admit I didn't really gel with the necrons at first and concentrated more on the more established factions (SM,CSM,Tau, Eldar) so happy there may be some new experiences!!
Compromise: Necrons both PvE and PvP Tyranids are all fine and good, but after a while, it would be interesting to see new places and different kinds of dungeons than ones crawling with them. The planet could also contain playable necrons (or maybe necrons who have come from another tomb world), who may or may not fight the NPC-necrons.
I dunno about PVE and PVP of the same faction. Only factions that would really make sense would be Chaos Daemons and Orks. And maybe Human rebels/renegades/bandits/pirates. But Necrons? A lot less likely, since they are such an orderly faction. I mean it's not impossible for Necrons to be fighting amongst themselves, but it's a lot less likely than other factions. It's like Eldar fighting amongst themselves.
Then they could be NPCs and PCs without the possibility of fighting each other. Other factions still could.
