I think the Necrons are going to be used a a PvE race. They seem to fit way better as a PvE race. From a design cycling between Tyranids and the Necrons would keep the game fresher longer. Also could have bursts of content when you cycle in the other race. Their kill all life thing fits nicely into lore and why they would even be there. They would give very nice contrast to Tyranids. While Tyranids would be coming in endless waves in order to be gunned down, the Necrons might come in much smaller number but harder to take down. Also I don't think it would be fun to play as them too. As far as I can tell your average Necron is pretty standard with little variants to the "model". They don't have options when it comes how to equip but instead go by who to spend in. What are your guys thought.
It makes sense for Necrons to be NPC, given your average necron warrior is a mindless drone, bound to the will of his lord, so in order to play as a Necron, you would have to be lychguard/praetorian/deathmark etc. Shame really, as I quite like the race, but I don't see it as practical. However, I expect we'd see Necrons released post-launch (if ever) as it's better to make sure the current 5 races are polished before adding more
I'd like to see Necrons as a post launch PvE faction. Maybe we go to a different planet and instead of Tyranids we find Necrons?
I think if they add them will be as a playable faction but I will also like the idea of a 2nd npc race, just in case that Arkhona is not big enough for us and we end up fighting in other planets of the system. Also fuck the new lore and Blood Angel and necrons being best bros, necrons as mindless killing machine = good, necros as a 40k version of Tomb Kings = awful.
From what Miguel said in that 4chan thread thing Necrons are on the list of factions GW let them put in as playable, unless there is some misunderstanding. They could be a playable faction without much fuss, in terms of balance, classes and all that stuff. For me, the greatest problem with them is that they probably shouldn't or wouldn't communicate with other factions and thus it would be weird to have alliances with them. Of course, there is a precedent for that... -_-
Doubt we'll leave Arkhona for a while, however. Maybe Arkhona is a tomb world (though how no one noticed before hand is a mystery... ) Personally, I quite like the new necron lore - mindless killing machine lacks character in my opinion, and is kind of boring...
The problem with negron, tyranid, IG etc is that they rely on numbers to prevail. Weak but vast etc. if you put them in as playable, even if you move up the ranks, a Necron lord isn't going to be out for a stroll on his own or only with some other Necron lords, he'd have a cast army of gun bait which is something that isn't going to happen for players.
Necrons don't particularly rely on numbers as tyranids/IG do. Anyway, Orks rely on numbers (though they're F2W). Though there are meant to be a lot of Necrons, the majority are in stasis...
Necron Warriors are considered MEQs, even though they only have a 4+ armor save. This is because of Reanimation Protocols and the fact that gauss rifles are insane. Necron Warriors cost 13 points/model, same as CSM. Really compared to Space Marines, EVERYONE arguably "relies on numbers". Space Marines are the only faction I can think of that pays 14 points/model MINIMUM for their basic troops. This is because Space Marines were meant to be a newbie faction. They're easy to paint (lots of large smooth surfaces, very simple color schemes), you don't have to buy many models, and you don't have to be very good at strategy games to play them because a Tac can hold up fairly well in almost any situation he ends up in. Plus their 3+ armor save means you often don't even have to think about things like terrain or cover. Being a newbie faction also means that their power is more obvious than other factions, they have relatively few force multipliers and are never really forced to rely on them. This does not mean they are the "best faction EVAR" though, that's newbie thinking. Other factions typically have more intricate mechanics and more specialized units that, when used correctly, can pull a lot more weight than their base stats would imply. Claiming that other factions don't even belong in 40k because their basic troop can't 1v1 a Tac in all situations makes you look like a newbie. When evaluating a faction it is important to account for their entire unit list as well as their special rules, as these can make the faction as a whole far stronger than you would think from just comparing TTKs between their most basic models using their most basic gear.
This again. People PLEASE do me a favor. Read the latest Necron codex. I am sick and tired of reading that Necrons are a PVE faction. The only argument supporting this is that Necron Warriors/Flayed Ones are mindless. Who cares? The rest of them aren't. We'll be playing them, thanks. Also the latest lore is miles better than the original lore. The original lore was basically a non-lore. There was zero content. And people complaining about the new lore making them Tomb Kings in space... WOOP-DEE-DOO! The old ones where (Star-)Vampire Counts in space. Also the new Necrons communicate a lot with their enemies. Some use psychological warfare, others are even as honorable as to offer their opponents a chance to surrender and retreat from their planets (which of course - this being grimdark 40k - is never accepted ) ALSO: Isn't this game supposed to be PVP centered? Why are so many people so eager to add more PVE content, while at the same time undercutting PVP-potential by removing a possible player faction.
