^Yup^ Also some clarinet/oboe for flavouring. I've always found that arrangements with a minimal number of clarinet/oboe flares and stuff can really give an outlandish feel to a song. Jeremy Soule does this very well IMO. The Elder Scrolls 3-5, Azurik: Rise of Perathia, and Knights of the Old Republic all have plenty of examples of this).
For Chaos best inspiration is form Doom / Drone metal I think : For SM, some Martial Industrial is good too :
Probably my fave of the Ultramarines soundtrack, really emanates that proud and heroic vibe behind the loyal Astartes: View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLdM6hG_2wc
Give this a listen please, from 1:55 on if you're short on time. I think this stuff is fast enough for the speed of a battle, with enough 'weight' behind the music to do justice to the WH40K universe, if anyone understands what I'm on about? At any rate, I don't think anything with vocals is a good idea for general background music as human voice is far more distracting than instrumental track alone.
I like that music. I also agree and disagree with voice for music. It could be a grand inclusion for fighting as and alongside Hero units.
