Mumble

Discussion in 'Ask the Team' started by Shepard_Fenryka, Oct 19, 2013.

  1. Greetings EC staff and fans

I am an avid player of the mod of the year (various years) Project Reality aka. PR. hope some of you will of heard of that, it uses the bf2 engine to bring us as close to actual warfare as possible.

    Anyway
The PR Devs are smart cookies, a while back they allowed for mumble support which is now a key part of the game and integrated rather than VOIP.

What is mumble I hear some of you ask?
Mumble is a voice communications software, take for example me leading a squad in PR. I can speak in voice on local, a range of about 20m max in the bf2 engine, meaning i can tell people to do stuff when they are infront of me, even if they arent in my squad.
Then theres squad chat where the squad is linked through radio comms and can communicate over distances.
Then theres commander chat where squad leaders have a direct line of voice comms to the commander to rely situations and issue orders.
Lastly theres squad to squad radio where squad leaders can communicate and form stratergies etc.

This has made PR. SO MUCH BETTER, and it wasnt that difficult to do.

Think of it for EC, a silent battlefield wouldnt be true to 40k, how about enemies can actually talk to each other in the midst of combat? or call for aid from a local squad / player?
We'd be creating an experience that hasn't been seen before.

If any EC Staff are interested in this they can consult the mumble website or better yet i can put you guys in touch with the PR Developers who engineered mumble for PR.

I want that chaos marine to know I am the Emperors will before stamping on his helm

  3. yes, like posted in the other forum we are prototyping and investigating different options for voice chat, vicinity chat and other options.
I personally haven't tried mumble yet, but I'll make sure to give it a shot - it definitely looks interesting!

Well, to give you an idea, Mumble is a very lightweigh and securized VOIP software. It doesn't have all the fancy features of TS, but it runs on everything.

  5. Yeah but the in game location system and local chat put it beyond TS
  6. well it is not about features at this point - first we need to test it, especially because we expect thousands of players to use it, then we can figure out which system is good enough for us.

  7. Well in that case id point u to the fact project reality is currently hosting in excess of 200+ people on 1 server on the same mumble server.

Now consider that u can create settings as such there are in mumble, that when you enter a specific area it enters you into a specific channel.
For example when you become a squad leader in game (like commander mode) u automatically join the squad leader channel to communicate with other squad leaders.

Also when you join a server from the server selection screen, you will automatically be connected to the mumble server that is associated with the game server.

Now your not really gonna have thousands of people within local range chat, that alone would be deafening. Each battlefield can have its own server. for 500 or so people i dont believe thats a problem for the software.
You can have your own mumble server for PvE areas, large areas.

You should research this, its already been tested on PR, you would have to talk to the Devs for more specific info

Never messed with Mumble's positional but after using ACRE in Arma 3 for TS, I have to say it definitely adds to the experience.

I have never used it on TS and VENT, I'd like to see a in-game voice chat set up
