Pretty much everyone is aware of WS and occasionally rhinos and truck going into places they don't belong like cap rooms, and roofs and up certain pipes on harkus onto the walls. Ive been advocating for a while a sort of "mount the tank" type system whereby characters use the E key to climb onto the tank friendly or foe, remove instant destruction of all tanks entirely they smoke for a few seconds before detonating in ALL cases and if a player is mounted to a tank when it reaches critical damage or they press the "get down" button they AUTOMATICALLY hop safely off the tank to a safe range to not take damage. allow the player to tear at the tank and do damage while hes on the tank through RMB prompts. you no longer have to have the fist stunlock vehicles lets face it any type of nonstop stunlock is boring for both parties, and you could have it suppress the gunners instead making it harder for them to aim and faster for them to accumulate spread. you can also tone down the melta bomb/melta gun combo a tad since more players will be able to engage and assist on tanks, not to mention those who cant damage a tank can use the quick maneuver to avoid being run over of climbing on the tank then climbing off the tank, i think its something that should be perform able after assault jumping on top of a tank as well. http://media.moddb.com/images/groups/1/3/2055/Man_vs_Tank.jpg I think conceptually its going to solve a lot of the problems you see complained about in the forums in regards to the WS in that people cant melta bomb it or keep up with it to melta gun it, it would reduce a LOT of the necessity and desire to nerf the tank since once you got in range one time you could climb on and they would have to either get out and fight you or run to help with the tank but they couldnt stop your dps vs the tank by just driving off. later on down the road if we get the license for tau we will have this same problm all over again as the tau troop transport/tanks are very similar in feel to the eldar WS. As long as all factions and classes get a version of it i dont think its going to be a balance issue you could make it so the grenade button slaps a grenade or melta on and then they get off the tank automatically ... From a sales perspective .... a lot more interesting and dramatic motions in the game would do a lot to sell its feel to players. jumping on top of a tank and vicerally punching and pulling peices of armor off is something no other shooter has or is likely going to bring to the table for psychological impact on new players, sure its achieving the same thing as balancing swing invulnerability, runover velocity, etc. but this seems though to require more video assets be a more "mechanically" sound way to make this a more viable thing in play. However Cinematic-ally it has a much more drastic impact and "man im a beast" type feel to it giving as much more gratifying experience for the same mechanics. It also seems to indirectly counter vehicles getting into where they arent supposed to since the entire point is to use the vehicle as a sponge while you run over people spawning and gun people down that have no defense since they arent a tank hunting class spawning in a place tanks shouldnt be ... they could hop onto the tank and or use the dismount to get around the guns temporarily and "nickel and dime" it to death since the tank is devoid of support infantry and way into enemy lines ... pretty much what SHOULD happen to a tank in that circumstance. keep in mind this should also be helpful to eldar when they get scorpions claw, and glaives/spears.
Well I agree... Instant tank explosions should be changed. I`ve killed many my team members assaulting the tank couse they were on the oposite side of it and I couldn`t see them. About "mount the tank" system and jump packers on top of it tearing armour off... They can`t even make some covers brace weapons properly and my character can just stuck on flat ground... So I think you are too optimistic about their abilities...
this seems mechanically easier to pull off then all the glitches they have presently with passing through tanks, tanks not reacting to hits, wierd runover mechanics, and all the mess with trying to keep it the same as normal ground combat mechanics .... and i agree its not AS necessary for ranged classes they have a lot less trouble using the melta/multimelta/etc. to get the job done but theres at least a thread a week about how the WS can't be hit cause its too fast and agile and floats off the ground bombs dont stick etc., it seems like this albeit difficult "visually" programming to pull of is "mechanically" easier to program and balance, aka as soon as you tap e at the context sensitive distance boom we are in our own mini-game bubble and we can have our own meta and balance within that bubble. Its important to note i want ALL classes capable of doing this ..... not just jumpers. all tanks are way too good at tokyo drifting infantry.
I could understand for orks, but wouldn't SM and CSM look silly riding a pred? Plus wouldn't Eldar look way too similar to Dark Eldar. But the assault one sounds good, sorta like Halo 2?
I think one thing that also needs to change is the rate at which vehicles explode, maybe make it more like the tabletop where sometimes they just get scrapped and other times they explode but the occupants didn't die from it.
