Depending on how well the Founders program does I'll hold off on commenting as it might still happen.
Base upgrades would be a factor that make people stop calling in the future "Planetside 2: W40k Version" In PS2, when you take an outpost , only the colors of the faction change with that Base upgrades, it would bring a new immersive and functional atmosphere for the game
I don't see upgrading bases as a huge deal...personally I'd rather see upgrades to the player characters and maybe guild flagships. I WILL be highly disappointed if somehow the guild flagships don't make it to launch... All in all I don't see why people would be spending a great deal of time at individual strongholds outside of battle and I can foresee the smaller bases changing hands multiple times a day. Trying to implement systems to make the turrets and shields slightly more powerful via RP would probably end up being a waste.
You answered your own question. Its exactly to combat things swapping hands multiple times a day. Thats why PS2 is so boring. You are just changing hands constantly and no fortress has any weight to it. Considering Steven already confirmed in the last AMA that some fortresses will even give the faction special abilities (probably something like global abilities) theres more than enough reason to actually defend a particular place. Not camping it all day per say, but not going too far from it till its upgraded enough for you to be sure it wont fall over to a fart from the opposing faction.
But djemo what if they fart in your general direction lol. Ok yea I would like upgradable bases just beacaude that's awesome it can really make strike forces players attached to a fortress the captured possibly even enough to pull them off the front line to defend it beacaude that's how in everything but tau logic works when something important is attacked. I wholly agree with djemo the constant struggle and combat for identical bases gets boring one minute you log on you own the world and you log off in your favriote battle point. The next minute you log on and you are backed to your warp gate. It's tedious and aggravating if bases could be upgraded even slightly to be easier to defend so that they aren't steam rolled by a 5 man squad I would love it.
The sad truth is that this will be but the first of many features that will be "implemented later". The hype created by both the community and bE has led to a set of expectations that are extremely unlikely to make it into the game. It is at this point of time that game communities tend to divide into those who jump down from the train and calmly follow how things develop, those who choose to stay onboard and will defend the game with teeth and claws (and rapid-fire apologisms such as 'I-it's still in the Alpha/Beta' or 't-they'll patch it'), and finally those who initially had the first row of seats on the train and now enter varying states of being butthurt and buttmad while claiming that the game will bomb like TORtanic and AtlanTES.
I just hope this doesn't go the way of Warhammer Online. They promised the sun and the stars, six cities, epic sieges, a gillion classes. By the time the game was shut down they still had the same two cities that they had at launch. While the missing classes were readded, the scale and epic experience were next to non-existent. They need to be very careful that they don't get too over zealous and set realistic goals.
i agree with this. To be able to upgrade your base or attachments to it is critical but its early in the process.
