Miguel: Our First Date - Base Upgrades No Longer Planned

It was brought to my attention this morning by one of the fine members of this community (Krooza Nob Bozz) that base upgrades are no longer planned for this game at launch. While much of the following dialogue is what I already expressed, it truly encompasses my disposition on the issue. It would seem that others were not aware of this development as well so I felt it deserved a separate topic in itself.

Q: On the thought of bases can we spend resources to upgrade the defences and resource production?

A: Everyone on the design team has dreamed of a feature like this, but at the moment this doesn’t look like it will be a part of the core game. This might be a candidate for a feature to bring back after launch though!

    This is very discouraging...

If there is one thing I have learned over the years it is:

"This might be a candidate for a feature to bring back after launch though!"

    is code for:

    "This will never be implemented."

Behaviour, can we sit down & talk for a minute? Heart to heart. This is the second big feature that I am aware of that is being "Delayed until after launch" and we are not even out of pre-alpha...I would not be surprised if there are many more I am not aware of or more to come for that matter.

Miguel put it best when he said:

"I am going in Vacation NOW but down deep I really did not want to go since we are still in our ''seduction'' period with all of you. This is our first diner out and I felt that if I leave that beautiful DATE for 10 min, she will be gone when I come back."

It is just that... our first date. Lets pretend we met online & you advertised profile (x) :

    http://www.jeuxonline.info/actualit...nous-parlent-warhammer-40-000-eternal-crusade

"Some parts of a stronghold can be destroyed in order to facilitate an assault but the main objective will be to capture it and not destroy it. Then, players will be able to repair it, add upgrades, etc if they have enough resources"

We show up to the date & feel "catfished" because:

Everyone on the design team has dreamed of a feature like this, but at the moment this doesn’t look like it will be a part of the core game. This might be a candidate for a feature to bring back after launch though!

I'm not trying to be difficult, but this is the 40K license we are talking about here. If Games Workshop is being frugal & hasn't allotted you the proper funding for this project, you need to renegotiate. As an outside observer Behaviour appears to be drastically low on either artists or whatever other resources are needed to fulfill these necessities.

All these sacrifices continue to add up. This game has the opportunity to redefine a genre. Do not settle for mediocrity.

    Why Base Upgrades Are Vital
By allowing players to create fortifications & base upgrades it creates "Attachment". It makes the simple task of capturing base (xyz) more meaningful. Players will take it upon themselves to insure the base is properly defended to insure their investment towards said upgrade is well spent.

It allows defenders to set up a proper defense against overwhelming odds that otherwise would be certain defeat.

Much of this games emphasis is the tools that will be available for leaders/council members. Being able to establish a defense will increase the tools/options available to these leaders/council members.

Hmm, did miss that part. Gotta agree its kinda disheartening to hear a good system like that not being implemented.

Would of been neat to see a base that wasnt engaged for ages to actually be upgraded greatly as noone went and harassed its supply routes. Basically a regular fortress that was in time upgraded to a hella strong fortress to topple over.
This would have also logically translated into writing/rewriting the battle lines.
For instance knowing when you are biting more than you can chew and thinking smart, capping some base that is on the current path of where you want your campaign to proceed, then spend tons of manpower and game hours making sure supplies trickle into it so you can make it a bastion that will be your main line of defense against your battle front being destroyed on that end.

Without something like an upgrade system i fear people will just hop from objective to objective without making sure what they leave in their wake is reinforced and entrenched enough to withstand a good assault.

On the post launch note, i dunno i hope when they say post launch they dont do what many other devs do and just write that off at one point as something they think people will forget.
Primarily cause one of the things that will get me overhyped when it happens is also a post launch planned inclusion, and that is full blown god dedication for Chaos.

So yeah...if we have no choice but to see it post launch i hope we actually get to see it. Though i wouldnt mind it for sure if it was on launch. And hell things like these are stuff id assume the stretch goals were made for. So perhaps it would be one of those, id vote that over a 5th faction any day of the week (but id still always vote for god dedication first and foremost:D).
  3. .upgrading is a leader thing
so this feature could only be used by less then 0,01%
    of the community

so its understandable that they will delay this to get the core game right

which was the other big disappointment BTW?

They talked about stretch goals with the founder program to add features that were not supposed to be at launch (or even in the game) I think base upgrades should be one of those...

I disagree Savij if we follow your logic nothing related to the War Council should be in because it will be used just by 0,01% of the playerbase, even if only the war council members can upgrade bases the entire faction can benefit from it, more defensible bases, increased resource generation etc, and it will affect the gameplay of all factions, a base that might be irrelevant can become a target if the enemy faction dump enough resources.

I think this is a big point to make EC something beyond PS2 and his meaningless terrain capture.

It was my understanding that base upgrades would be possible by anyone much like Guild Wars 2. Then again, I wasn't aware that base upgrades had been dismissed so perhaps I misinterpreted. Although it is easy to see how one would:

"players will be able to repair it, add upgrades, etc if they have enough resources"

As you stated, leaders will likely consist of 1% of less of the population. It doesn't seem sensible to have such an involved mechanic not available to 99% of the population. Base upgrades are something that all players should be apart of, not just leaders.

Quite frankly, upgradable bases is something I can live without, even after launch. I would MUCH prefer Necrons as a playable faction. At launch or after.

That aside, I completely agree with the "attachment" argument. Having upgradable bases is a good thing, it's just that I see other things having a higher priority.

I always imagined base upgrading to only be making the turrets stronger, giving the gate more health and possibly increasing its resource storage capabilities. I don't think I ever really expected much out of this feature. Shame that it's cut though.
  9. Seems disappointing.

Upgrades give depth to the base system.

I'm in full agreement with the OP about the worrying nature of the 'it'll be put in after launch' system. Warhammer Online pulled a fast one, not even managing to include all of its classes or all the capital cities at launch. It took them months to add in the final classes, and they never got around to implementing the cities. I could go on and list other games that have done the exact same thing, but I'm sure many of you have experienced this before too. It's getting to the point where the warning signs are all too familiar, and this is definitely one of them.

It's still early days, so it remains to be seen how much more stuff gets sidetracked or implemented differently, but the first date analogy works well. In my experience, the ones who just say what you want to hear are never worth it.
