I was watching a stream of Eternal Crusade, and then a thought popped in my head. Could we get a map editor somehow? It could work like this: The editor would be buyable as an 'expansion' to the game, maybe 8 or more US Dollars depending how much work has to go in. To get to basics, the map editor could be like Roblox's studio. (don't kill me for mentioning that.) Where we can get objects and entities through a dropdown list with a picture of each item and the simplistic map creation hud. The map size could work like Men Of War's gem editor, but of course with a map size boundary that the game could handle. The maps could have terrain that could be changed in texture, material, and other things. And if possible; environmental npcs. Of course with a limit of maybe 6 or so npcs. What could a map editor do after the map is made and ready? A steam workshop could be made on steam, where maps can be created and if popular and balanced enough, be ultimately added into the game. There could be contests, rewards or not based on a certain map topic also to make the community get more involved with the game's development. That is all that is on my mind so far about how the map editor could work. So yea, something like the source tf2 map workshop thing. I do it would cost a lot.. But could it mean easier development in the long run?
It would be nice. I'd make a big open muddy/bloody field with trenches and little cover where 100 players could battle it out in a last man standing kinda thing but unfortunately I do not think it would tie in with the model they are trying to promote with reward boxes and such as it would probably be open to people abusing maps to get them and exp. Not to mention the huge amount of work it would take not just with implementing it but to work everything else around it to keep it balanced and fair.
Game is supposed to have player-driven capmaigns where each map counts. This means that maps need to be balanced in terms of correct A\D favor. Creating fanmade maps will only work if we would have non-competitive gameplay segment hich we most probably won't have
As for the EXP issue, the solution is to not let them gain EXP on fan maps unless the developers deem the map official.
It's... not that simple. The mapmaking part that is. You need to learn programming too. It's not like maps in things like RTS games or roblox or anything similar, you have to put A LOT MORE of effort into it. I'm not saying the community is incapable of doing it, quite the contrary I think that we would get great maps from that, BUT I'm just saying it's not as simple as selecting objects placing them down and editing the terrain. It CAN be if every object has programmed impassable/passable on it but idk if devs have done that, if so then if they have also done so that you just select the gamemode you want and place down points then it is as simple as you said. But I'm afraid that that's really no the case. By the way, you can try this out with Ark Survival Evolved, it is free and they use the same game engine but ARK just uses a modified UE4 executable which is most likely the same thing that EC devs use, to make maps. Aside all that, YES! Please devs, GIVE US A MAPMAKER TOOL!
hells no keep as much of the game serverside as possible ... the more content client side means the easier it is to hack the game, which means the more and more security bE have to keep adding as hackers worm their way in eventually, which means the more and more money that could create new features gets wasted on the security which never works for long anyway
The devs wouldn't have to use the map as is, but maybe as a starting point. It is a great way to see what the community wants. This is what I would like to see. Some more "natural" maps. I want something other than urban warfare. Great idea. Also allow players to vote or choose maps to play on. This would be 100% marketing gold to determine what their customer wants. Most people cannot tell you what they want, but if they see something, they can tell you what they like and dislike about it.
i wold love to have a map edditor for the workshop. most odd game tipes maps are from old aditions of the game like gorkamorka. tile sets can be expensive so also in the workshop you could out source your tiles.
