This needs to be brought to attention Should lore be more important that balance in the game if so tell me why or why not
  2. Preferably make the balancing suit the lore but meh.

You need both in a Warhammer 40K game.
  4. What exactly are you trying to balance? In most cases I think you can balance the overall effectiveness of each faction without compromising there lore.

most of the times you will balance compromising lore and that is the best way. I don't think lore will ever be compromised to the point where people will rage though. I did not vote because i think there needs to be balance of both and I do care :p

Balance for sure, I don't think we want to see one race be absolutely worse than another.

    The lore is balanced.

For the simple reason that all the factions are overpowered in their lore.
  8. Its going to have to be balance.

The lore allows for members of a race (e.g. models) to be significantly better or worse than other members of other races. For example, Orks, Tyranids and Imperial Guard use massive numbers to achieve victory compared to the smaller elite forces like the Space Marines or Eldar.

That simply can't be transferred to a game where you're not population controlled via an army points model. So right from the beginning, balance needs to take precedence to ensure good gameplay. The adaptations may not need to be huge, but will be necessary to ensure you don't have, for example, Space Marines roflstomping everyone else, leading to everyone rolling as Space Marines and complaining that no-one plays the weaker races to give them someone to roflstomp.

For similar reasons, the 40k lore is adapted in the different games (e.g. Rogue Trader vs 40k TT vs Necromunda) to ensure that the game itself is balanced and enjoyable. This is a good thing. :)

    This.

In a multiplayer game, it's important to ensure that everyone is having fun. Fortunately, as Kanthric said, the lore is ambiguous and has a lot of "wiggle room", all excused by GW's "everything is a lie" policy that basically allows us to cherrypick what we prefer from the many official and licensed sources that are available.

With a bit of clever design, there should not be much of a problem in ensuring a balanced game field. For example, an idea that has been brought up for the Imperial Guard would be to give players a bunch of AI-controlled comrades to increase their firepower and survivability, and better reflect the Imperial Guard's "quantity > quality" attitude. Alternatively, the Guard could have much easier access to armoured vehicles than the other races, but before they can spawn a tank, aspiring drivers must first score a few points as infantry (ideally in co-operation with tank players).

Orks and Tyranids are probably special cases, in that the latter are entirely AI-controlled, whereas with the former, the paying players will have access to more elite types of characters, whereas the teeming masses are sponsored by F2P players.

Come to think of it, making the Imperial Guard another F2P faction and turn paying players into officers, specialists (snipers, psykers, storm troopers) and tank drivers would work, too.

Both. Remove plot armor and we can have both.
