i would say it is a common misconception that linux programming is harder than windows. there is a lot of documentation out there, you just have to learn it. basically it doesnt come down to cost or even whether it can be done, but more of whether it would be worth the effort.

right now games dont come out for linux because most ppl use windows. they see no reason to come out with a native linux version for only 2-5% of the population(and that 2-5% will play on windows if they have to). the problem here is that a lot of people only use windows because companies only come out with good games for windows. it is kindof a self fulfilling prophecy.

imo, we need a couple of really good linux games and we will see the downfall of windows gaming.

  2. I think I was wrong by saying "harder", what I mean is more time consuming, which means harder I guess, point of view. But I see you point and understand where you come from.

Valve has alot of awesome tools for converting DirectX to Opengl..and they are working on some great debugging tools. By the time this comes out, the tools will be awesome. Plus with these new engines coming to Linux.. UE4, and Cryengine, i am sure porting games to Linux will be more of a common thing. I would LOVE to see this game on Linux.
  4. Yep, when Valve released their tools to the public, news of released code spread like wildfire among developers. The industry as a whole is moving over to OpenGL in general now anyway. Only reason DirectX is still in use is primarily because of the Xbox and Live service, there was a time when OpenGL didn't have all the bells and whistles of DirectX (for instance once upon a time you had to write your own texture draw libraries for OpenGL, now you can simply download them for free), but that time kind of ended around 6 years ago. The public has been slow to become aware of it, but in the industry reliance on DirectX has been going out of popular use since 2010 abouts.

Also it's much much easier to port a game to Linux when it has at it's core OpenGL. The biggest obstacle to making games for Linux I'm told is two things: Firstly, Industry Standard of relying on Visual Studio to do C++ programing simply because it is really good (one of MS's only good products) for intellisense which results in the program being dependent on system libraries local to windows, this can be overcome by writing in links to libraries common to iOSX and Linux but in turn it also means you might need to re-write some of the source code as well. The second being the Linux/Unix structuring of file names (the use of capital letters, special characters and <space> it doesn't like at all), it doesn't like some characters and formats of naming which both Windows and iOSX don't have issues with, some don't but, as we all know, there are so many different versions of Linux out there, you need to account for the ones which are picky about file names.

well, windows thinks the capital character is the same as the lowercase... which is kindof stupid if you ask me.
  6. I would kill a carnifex for a SteamOS / Linux port!

    Hi all !

Sorry for upping this thread but a version will be available in June, the 25th. It will be high costing to access it (around 50$ if I do not mistake). My computer is a linux one and, before buying anything, i would like to be sure the game can be played on linux or wine. If i can't be sure to be able to play on it, I'll wait for the F2P version ;-)

Can someone can give us more information on it ?
  8. The Founders Pack will be PC Windows only atm - though we are still hoping to also release on Mac and SteamOS (Linux).

if we buy the window's pack and you later come out with linux, will we have to pay for that too or will it be included?

there wont be a free to play version... there will be buy to play and free to play ork boyz. if you dont pay for the game you wont be able to play any other class.
