Both. If I want to read up on something, possibly something completely new to me, always both (also 1d4chan but I never really know why I go there). I probably don't need to say which one has better sourcing. Wikia has a lot of pretty images though.
Hi, this is Madness (wow, what a poor turn of the phrase), I'm a semi-permanent staffer for Lexicanum, recently I've been doing sweeping changes to the site. If you feel like it, I'd appreciate some feedback, what do you like, what do you hate, what would you change. Mind you, I'm not a Genie in a Lamp nor a monkey paw, so no automatic wish-granting (which is good for you as well, if you've ever seen The Wishmaster), but I promise I will very much keep your opinions in consideration while doing changes.
i must admit, i kinda liked some of the old less mobile oriented look better, even when i was on my phone. Also the old intro page was a bit nicer srry :/
So... always? Some design questions sadly are not completely in our hand. Lexicanum is now a part of Bell of Lost Souls, and there is a company behind that (that's why we have ads now and so). Some desing choices to make the Lexicanum Mobile-accessible may not be popular (the sparkly login-button for example), but at least we HAVE a mobile gateway now. Needs of the many and so, even I can't postpone progress forever (still don't know what was considered outdated about steam-powered hamsters...)
I still casually browse the Wh40k wiki and see fanon or fan made stuff being passed off as the Lore... Kronus pattern Leman Russ tanks using predator turrets indeed... Oh and fan made images such as las guns made in Pimp my gun showing up. For this reason I use Lexicanum as not everyone can edit Lexicanum's articles and there's a degree of quality control. [Edit] Its been years and this stuff still exists.
I certainly haven't noticed all the changes, but it is great to see that the changer is ready for feedback. I haven't had anything to complain about, though... at least not yet! Change is good! - Tzeentch
I always appreciated the bold stylistic choice of lex going full grim and dark with the palette for a grimdark website, BUT, every media has its rules and our public is becoming older, and statistically, biologically born males over 40 have a higher impact of colorblindness, short and farsightedness, plus there's dislexia and whatnot. If you want a nice tool to play with colors, try this: http://jxnblk.com/colorable/?mode=app&colors=#fff.#111.#ddd (edit the colors on the right, and they get compared to themselves, adding a row automatically also adds a column). Just because the Imperium is intolerant and unaccessible doesn't mean we have to. So it wasn't a decision made to spite anyone, but just an effort to be more inclusive, because trust me, for every person that complains about having the old style back, there's at least one that complained about it being hard to read. That said, I don't want to drop the grimdark feel, I'm trying to trojan horse some things in, using box shadows. This same website has a tan background that is FAR lighter than Lex, yet, because of the dark outline and the shadows play, it looks even more ... grim, than Lex. Also a LOT of images come with a white background, which on a dark backdrop are kinda painful. That said, I consider myself a B-- designer at best, and while I can have epiphanies, I'm not yet happy about the result, I'll keep playing with it until I am. If anyone wants to do a before-after comparison, I recommend using the wayback machine https://web.archive.org/web/20080911040657/http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page (close the header with the top right red X for proper layout). When I'm done with the work I'm doing for the Lex (which might include moving to a Vector-based theme instead of a Monobook-based one) I might provide an alternative classic theme that people can switch to if they still like that one better.
You know, I love you for that We, the staff, NEVER had any problems with the dark look. I may be biased because I have a slight intolerance for brightness (sunshades are my best friend from march to november, and I use the darkest skin avaible on every forum that has one), but we only got about one complaint every few months that it were too dark. Well, BoLS finally brightened it. Sad, but irrefutable.
I use lexicanum for basic lore and background info like varius power armour, reference to characters, and etc. I use 1d4chan tactics area though as one of my many 2nd hand research resources on units and etc.
