Lord Ian the Noisemaker! Please tell us.. What will Ork Psyker sounds be like? Will there be the constant sound of fizzling out as the Orkz magic threatens to turn on its user?! Will the Ork psyker be cackling like mad the entire time?! ENLIGHTEN US! BRINGER OF SOUND! Please and thank you!
Good sound walkthrough Ian, really enjoyable. Thanks for answering my questions as well, i really am eager to see how intricate the whispering will be for these psychic power casting sounds. For example, simple whispering might be okay when you cast Undivided/Tzeentch powers. But when you start casting casting Slaanesh powers it would be awesome to here sounds of ecstasy (and possibly ecstatic moaning) and sounds of feminine cackling in your ears. To represent all those deamons (Deamonettes specifically) whispering in your ears and stroking your ego and senses. Them enjoying your spectacle from the other side of the veil as much as you are on the other. And then well, for Nurgle it would be cool to have the whispers in a lower toned murmur, more deep and grotesque sounding. With ofc, if possible, having an undertone of a droning insect swarm. Think i posted this quite awhile ago, but a good thing to use in the background of those deep Nurgly whispers, to really pull off that "herald of pestilence" vibe for the Nurlge marked Sorcerers would be something like this: View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXyVD_RiT50 View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nC8gvqy-Ys
You were saying how the Eldar were going to be futuristic but feral? I wanted share a few suggestions. One would be a sort of "FUS - RO -DAH!" moment when an Eldar does his psychic power. Instead of the raw and unstable forces the other races have at their disposal, the Eldar are masters of the art. So instead of the cackling and demonic forces channeled (or held at bay) the Eldar would hear their own voice commanding the warp to do their bidding - kinda like what you'd imagine fantasy mages would sound like. But they're also aliens. So... A. They'll sound different when they speak. B. Their spells will be in a different language. C. Some sort of distort is needed. I feel as though the distortion should carry with the power of the spell and how close they are to a perils attack. D. The distortion should also warp more the further into a phrase the voice is in. Instead of FUS - RO - DAH, we'll probably hear something like, "Ra Zain - E-TH!!" which roughly translates into "I will break your soul!" as a whiplash of lightning knocks the pants off a Chaos Marine or something. Also, these sounds can only be heard by the faction, and are at will, since the Eldar Pysker is connected with his kin, and the voice is internal. So if players don't want to hear it, they don't have to. I'd also suggest that you attempt to reclaim what has always been yours in the sense of Blizzard's Starcraft 1 Protoss voices - the Zealot especially. Take it directly? Obviously not. But that kind of distortion is probably along the lines of the mysticism and savagery, while the DOW series (DoW2 especially) convey's the highbrow wisdom needed to convey the Eldar.
One thing is that any spoken lines, instead of just sounds, will get old very fast. This is ok with cheers or voice commands, but psychic powers are used frequently like weapons by the players. That's why I would be in favour of the Eldar Psykers not speaking when using their powers, and only the powers themselves making a sound.
Yeah I'd actually agree with that as well. But what of whispers and shrieks that the Chaos powers already have? They sound good don't they? The Eldar should have something similar, and the above is a pretty good point of reference, if only its some sort of ambient sound.. like a sort of "acapella" weapon wind-up.
I came across this on youtube there is allot of other videos like it, Hopefully this can help out with chain lightning and so forth! Maybe the Chaos Sorcerer's chain lightning can also have a howl effect to it as well, maybe a scream Some of the small arc fires/explosions when it hits something metal and burns for a sec or two and different effects on different types of materials. Maybe giving it a small suppression effect even if it misses like a small AOE effect on hitting something/someone!
I think Chaos' Ectoplasma Cannon would be more fitting for the howl & scream rather than the sorcerer's lightning. "These weapons channel raw daemonic energy from the Warp and fire tortured, screaming souls which envelop their enemies." - from lexicanum link here. Weapon of Grimdark +10 right there.
Now that the game is in a limited but live state, please encourage people to post audio comments here to this thread.
yes yes will do @Djemo-SRB we will also need to focus here and not forget our poor dev Ivan in the chaos of yelling at brent to fix some things
