! You've just given me an interesting idea. Thanks for that! I hear what you are saying, and as a target those fluttering highs are pretty good, but I would prefer to build the sound from the ground up rather than do a full EQ on an existing soundfile as a severe EQ chop job can lead to some pretty messy results. And for Eldar I am aiming for super clean. I hear what you are saying but remember there needs to be headroom for other weapons in the game. If I used a cannon sfx for a bolter then what would I use for a cannon? It's the loudness war all over again. Yes, I totally agree that the go-to weapon for the ISM has to sound very pleasing and make sense with the lore. It also has to be identifiable on the battlefield, have character and function well mechanically (audio-engine side). Like I said in an earlier post, there is still work to do on what we have now. But it's coming. Cool! Thanks.
For me it's more about the tone. A gut deep boom is what I was referring to. While it would be close to sounding like a cannon, there would defiantly be some differences
No worries glad to be at service! I think the Waaagh has the potential to be the most interesting and unique FPS mutliplayer mechanic EVER created!! It has the potential to also make ORKS the most fun by far, intimidating other factions with its sound, mob granting perks and potential devastation! Which I think it would be so cool even once there is a open world in the far future, Say a group of Eldar and space marines are fighting, A sneaky huge bunch of Orks over a cliff face start screaming WaaaaaGH and run into the battle to disrupt it would be amazing- ( in my imagination at least!) You would hear them.. go Oh shit! Houston we have a problem.
@NoiseMaker could you please tell us any insight into what Plasma weapons would sound like (pistols, plasma rifles, and plasma cannons) or at least what the team aims for?
@NoiseMaker Here is something from the dark heresy rulebook. "Boltguns make a unique roaring sound when fired, which is caused as the propellant in their shells ignites followed shortly afterwards by an explosion when the bolt detonates upon hitting its target."
I did a kind of conceptual first foray into the plasma pistols and rifles as a warm up to joining the team back in January. When I moved to another task they were still a WIP but at least I discovered the direction. To move further I need the gun mechanics to work in-game. Right now they sound like a combination of a regular gun (I don't remember exactly what I used as I have a number of very good recordings of hand guns and rifles and I tend to combine initial attack transients from one recording with the noise 'bang' of another and the tail/reverb space of a third) mixed low with a kind of synthesized burst and a steam-like tail. I'll admit it's not very different from what most 'plasma' guns sound like in the SciFi canon but like I said, it's WIP at the mo.
I'm really liking the voices so far. They sound deep and brutal! Have you already hired professional voice actors, and are the voices modified?
I am really happy to hear this. These recordings are placeholders but my job is to get them to be as close to the correct delivery and tone as possible so when we hand them off to the pros they can be used as guides. The pro voices situation is still pending. That happens way above me. Yes, the voices are modified. The original voices are close but we needed to lower both Imperial and Chaos, and make them more 'intercom'.
