Killcam: How Should It Work?

Coming from the lackluster experience with PS2 death-screens all I want is some more immersion.

While I agree on that my idea might be a little bit too different from the third-person cam to make it in game, (though I wish) I also know that dying will be part of the game. Probably a lot of dying. And even the fanciest ideas of death will eventually turn out repetitive unless the player can still interact with the world somehow. Sadly this is hard to combine with the kill-cam spotting reducing the potential of ambushes and such, as well as giving the killer a clear man down. (If the player could still shoot while bleeding out, imo no fun. Works well in Borderlands, but I don't see it fitting EC.)

Due to the artificial experience I've had with similar third-person hover-cams when downed I can not really recommend that option. Just freezing the cam wherever it was when downed feels ... flat? And as mentioned, free cam is bad for sneaky tactics. Though I do see your point. The repetition might get invasive.

I want to emphasis that as death will inevitably be common in the crusade, I wish the devs really make sure that even dying is almost as intense as the living part of the game. If done properly, either options will make for glorious scenes of death!

    Update on the kill-cam:

    2. How do you think to implement the Kill cam? Do you already have a developed concept for it?

BRENT ELLISON: Kill cam, no (as in, the camera changes when you kill someone), because while you’re watching that someone else could just come up and murder you. Death cam, on the other hand, is something we’re planning to do. As in, when you get downed your camera briefly points at the location of the person that downed you so you can understand what happened. We don’t intend this to go on for too long though, since the person should have the chance to get away afterwards. You’ll also get information about your killer in the UI, including what weapon they were using, their name and class, etc.

Booooooooo major disapprove. Deathcams or killcams or w/e should never be a part of any game much less this one. I want to be sneaky and not punished for it, especially as an Eldar. I'm fine with it saying what weapon used, their name and class but no insight as to where they were.

Just a note. Throughout this post I do believe we all meant what Brent calls "deathcam" when we say killcam. (Eg. Something happens/is shown when our character is killed.)
    Kill-cam = Killed-cam

Great to have an answer, though I'm not happy with revealing the attacking player's position.

EDIT: Not happy at all. :/

In PS2 only infiltrators had any viable possibilities of ambush. They flamed hard when the direction of attacker was introduced on the death-screen. In PS2 in general, mobility is generic. Even the LA jetpacks are lame in comparison to what has been shown in the EC dev streams.

This lack of movement speed (ambush possibilities in general) turned out to prove the "direction of attacker" more or less superfluous. It answered the pugs' "Wtf snipez I'm dead happened?" Good. It frustrated the crap out of infiltrators doing their job. ((Some skilled infiltrator snipes some NC, NC brings their standard 1hs snipers. Aims where the infiltrator was. Skilled infiltrator is suddenly full of holes.)) (In my experience.) Bad.

(Sry PS2. Plenty of fun and grind, but not a game about ambush or flanking. You lacked the mobility. As I've got nothing else to compare to, you're taking hits.)

    Back to EC and 40k.
In 40k we have two entire factions who rely on speed/ambush/hit-n-run. The Eldar and their Dark brethren. Having a downed player being able to spot for his/her team when down will inevitably limit the space-elf reckoning. (Most Eldar might handle an ordinary battle, but Warpspiders? Dark Eldar? Maybe.)

    TL:DR;
I find it hard to implement a death-cam where the downed player can spot for his team without lowering the potential of ambush and flanking.

Thank you for the answer, you Rotten boy!

Anyway, I think that how the devs made this mechanic is ok-ish, as long as it doesn't highlight the enemy that killed you. I mean, even if you know the general direction from where came the killing blow, it's fine if you can't see your enemies' exact position.
Moreover, if a sneaky guy kills someone, he will be forced to reposition anyway, since the shot will have bursted his hideout.
In addition to that, I think this death cam would also prevent camping, because if you are killed repeatedly by the same guy from the same direction, that may give a hint at what he is doing....
The only thing which may be helpful for avoiding death-spotting would be to hide all the enemies on the area you see, so that you can know only the enemy position, but not their actual strenght.
    Lichtbringer and Miirk like this.

If it is done right, sure. I'm not totally against it, only worried that it could be abused. EC is mainly open combat rather than stealth, but I still want ambushes to be a viable tactic.

For the lols, gonna draw something about Deus Ex: HR - Now featuring undying guards!

    EDIT:
Guess I'm a Little narrow minded. In a coordinated team using teamspeak killed players will report an ambush and regroup to counter, even if they don't know from where and what hit them.

    Returning to the devs answer:
The bleedout-time as shown in the streams was pretty long. Showing the death-cam and attacking player's location after the bleedout - sure. The attacker gets time to sneak away, and the downed player knows what hit them and where they were at the instant they were killed.

Deathcams are unfair to players who plan out their attacks. I'm very disappointed with this, very disappointed.

Notthing like getting a kill cam of that tank that just shot you in the face...

Yeah... I have Played Enought tf2 to know that some strange glitches is doomed to happen when you zoom in on things...

Planetside 2 is working... in most chases...

(and pretty much the only game that i have seen so far that can hide a tank.)
  9. if we complain enough then they will change it for sure

but i think it doesnt make a big difference since our time to kill is kinda high + we have a downed state
so most of the time you will always have time to find out where the bullets come from

  10. I mean unless you get las cannoned, Good liek finding the bullets then!
