Killcam: How Should It Work?

I'm on up for the executions etc.

However personally, I don't think a kill cam should be added. It doesn't fit this genre, I think spotting when you're dead is cheating and reminds me of finding the sniper who killed you in CoD.

  2. If there must be a 'killcam' then make it a close range, top-down view of your corpse + an info card declaring what weapon killed you and whom it was wielded by.

There is zero need to display your killer's location, silhouette, or anything significant in regards to the direction the killing blow came, because you already know: It came from a place you weren't focused on. Anything more than this just leads to unneccessary griefing/trolling and/or raging.

  4. for a more minimal idea, have it go into either closer third, or first person, and have everything fade with a bright thin line following the path of what killed you, if you were killed in melee, it just say "you know what killed you..."

Slowmo replay of the few seconds leading to your demise -> fade to session stats & respawn options screen.

    To get inspired.

The Kill Cam should be an animation/scene of what happens to your soul after you die. Depending on your score, you are either rewarded with a glorious seat in whatever fable that awaits you (like joining the infinity circuit as the Eldar, or "Joining the Side of the Emperor") or being cast into the Warp and eaten / lost by demons or something if you are deemed "unworthy" by the scales of heroism. The Orks get something unique, and I would hope, hilarious, encouraging Kamikaze's.

I feel like this would shift the focus away from "oh that *@!#ing guy got me again with his OP weapon/perk..." to, "were my actions, my death, worthy?"

Okay, I've mixed some of the ideas expressed earlier and come up with a (horrible?) sketch and an idea.

    1. Random dude with Sniper in the bushes. Random unaware player scanning the area. Headshot and so on, and the player will inevitably be less happy unless something explains why and what happened.

    2. The moment the damaged players health drops below zero, "red screen flash" and switch to first person view. (Thx for this idea, Savij!) (This change of perspective would truly add immersion and intensity, don't you think?) As in the kill-feed, the attacking players' name and weapon is shown. (Maybe assists as well?) (No need to clutter the screen if allies soon will revive you.) From here the downed player can turn his/her neck and look around in a limited arc while the screen gets increasingly red/dark from the edges. (No turning around, but still some slight interaction in the bleedout.) (First 10 secs of this Black Ops 2 Zombies:

    , Ish.)

If I remember correctly from the first live-streams where the bleed-out mechanic was shown, it remained third person with cam still movable. I prefer the first person over the third person option (what you and your allies normally see) , as it is a realistic way to remove the death-spotting issue, while also not too much work in developement, (Moving the camera, some UI effects.)

    3. Things might get messy here if in first person. It is one thing to be shot in a game while in a firefight, another thing entirely to watch someone towering over yourself splitting you in half with a chainsword from point of view.
I guess there would have to be an option to close your eyes in these cases. (Though I do feel that in some cases, having an Ork Nob more or less gently smash your face with an evil grin would fit the universe of a grim dark future very nicely.) That last bullet, and screen goes black.

In case of allies reviving, things suddenly get way more personal if done this way. From my PS2 experience, there was this "meh" feeling when down, ("WHAT?" when the medic passed by ...), and if the medic did show up, all I got was a little circle of "Revive-o-meter." Sure I would thank them, but it was never really was something to remember.

If just killed and left to bleed out, simply let the screen fade to red/black.

    4. Only after proper death and black screen, the post death stats are shown. Once again, the killer and assists are shown. What weapon, the damage dealt, their loadout and so on also goes here. I agree on showing their remaining health, as it feels good to know if it at least was close. Their model should definitely be shown. (Where else to show-off their loot?) Your lifetime review also needs to be shown here. (The xp, damage done, lifetime, etc.) (PS2 is a good example, though too much info in very little time.)

    Just my thoughts.

  8. now, if they have/put in a "take them with you" perk the first person perspective could be cool.

chaos marine walks up to you, shoves chainsword in stomach, screen flashes bright red momentarily, and with the last of your strength you grab them by the collar and pull the pins on all your grenades, and the last thing you hear is both of your screaming and then it just cuts to black.

    Hmm...
Always an interesting subject with games of this nature.
Ashgarn is of a similar mind to myself. If you are downed and bleeding out then being able to spot for your team until you succumb to your wounds is a good thought. Keeping the cam to your character is the best way, as it keeps you in character until you fade out, re-spawn, and re-enter.
The suggestion that the cam pans out into an aerial view looking down on your character is a bit fanciful for my taste, but that's only personal opinion.
You go down, you lie there with limited movement of vision and, should your friendly neigbourhood medic fail to reach you, then the view gradually fogs until permanent death or a killing blow is delivered.
  10. Well the general view in the game is an over-the-shoulder 3rd person camera, so just switching it to an aerial view upon death isn't that different. If anything I think that forcing a constant switch to 1st-person whenever you die would be the more jarring of the options.
