Hello, I personally like achievements, challenges and things like that. I see a k/d ratio as a challenge and always aim to have more than 2 kills for each death. That being said, I also do not like seeing win/lose ratios in multiplayer games and would also prefer if there was no k/d in a game that requires sacrifice and teamwork over personal awesomeness. Allow me to go deeper into this discussion. PlanetSide2 (best example I can think of), if you played the game, then what I am about to say will make a lot of sense. I trained my entire clan to be good at one thing, taking out Sunderers (vehicle that deploys and turns into spawn point for that faction). Training for something like this requires a lot of sacrifice, trial & error and would usually end as a suicide mission (no details/secrets given). There would be times when I would plant my own spawn beacon (destroyable beacon placed by squad-leader that allowed squad members to spawn via drop-pods), go get myself killed and then drop in with a drop-pod via that spawn beacon next to the Sunderer and take it out, also getting myself killed. This is if everything went well and I was not shot down in the process. Did I ruin my k/d ratio? Yes. Did I single-highhandedly stop a lot of assaults? Yes. I guess the point I am trying to make is that your k/d ratio should not be used against you in a game that requires sacrifice, resulting in bad k/d ratios. I personally have nothing against the k/d ratio counter existing for those that wish to measure their skill, but it should not be displayed on your profile. Some people get really upset and really dislike the idea of a k/d ratio counter in general, others acknowledge that there is no use for it in such a game and the rest either don't mind or would like to have it for personal achievements. In such a game, people with large k/d ratio counters will probably be snipers and campers while the real heroes of the battle end up with a crappy ratio. If I would make an argument for the counter to be removed, that argument would be that it is used to demoralize some, increase the ego of the wrong people and does not help the team players feel good about what they are doing. I won't judge the people that like having a good k/d ratio or the people that are not really good at this kind of game and end up having a bad k/d ratio. It is a game and we should all play it the way we like and can. Before answering the question of "Should there be a k/d ratio counter", ask yourself what you think the difference will be. Will a player's low k/d ratio make you feel kind of bad for letting him gun your vehicle? Will your low k/d ratio force you to play solo because playing with your team gets you killed too often? I think there should be a counter somewhere for those that are really interested in their stats (somewhere not on display) but I can see a lot more good coming out of this if there was no counter. Please comments with your opinions and personal experiences. (Best if you played a game like this one.) Best regards, WNxAkalonian
Although K/D ratios are not always ideal, I believe that they can and will be used as a tool to determine purity seals, awards, commendations, etc. However, at the same time, I don't really want some sort of Score sheet for each player. Perhaps just for personal use or only for the squad leaders/commanders eyes.
To add to this, I'd like to say some factions in 40k shouldn't care about K/D it would be rather odd to see an Ork boy worrying about his K/D rather then screaming ''WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGH'' or a Khornate Berserker sitting back because he's afraid to die. I guess you know what I mean of course were all players now, its just that I believe it may seem weird sometimes. But then again, this may very well be the lore fanatic/rp fanatic in me speaking. as for everything you said, I couldn't agree more, I've played PS2 quite alot on the side of the Vanu, and being overrun by enemies just because your team mates would rather spawn camp in a bio dome is rather annoying.
K/D Ratio rewards is a terrible and awful idea in a game like this. This isn't supposed to be a FPS it's taking outposts planning attacks and using strategy. If people start determining K/D for rewards then what incentive is their to taking outposts and helping your race when you could just stomp Ork Boyz for your rewards? Apothecaries for example are there to heal. Troop transporters to support. No... Just f***ing no
K/D is lame and silly. If you want to make an assessment of player performance in a team game, look at Efficiency calculators in World of tanks. Naturally its fan made. However we will need the game first than see what is practical and crackable and see what can be implemented.
Then how would you measure success? How long someone stands on a point? Participation has to be measured somehow and I would rather it not be how long somebody stands at a location. Yes support roles are not necessarily going to get a lot of kills, but they can always implement an equally important, but parallel system of reward. It is foolish to believe that everyone is just going to follow orders. EVERY game has those people who just follow their own whims. And speaking canonically, it is LORE that having kill marks and other forms of kill counting to exist. MAYBE they should just count kills and not deaths?
Kills, damage done, Damage received, assists, capture, heal just a number of stats that can be tracked and to be used to give you an overall efficiency of a player. Basically the same thing used in Space Marine for the online XP count but numeric with a certain value to an action. Hard part about it is not the value or calculation. Its gathering the data.
I think it should be done, as it will stimulate players to actually play properly, worked really well in Conan, i think. Some people just don't care, others - do. If this will be introduced "losers" won't loose much anyway.
I'm going to shamelessly plug this thread that's in the dev section that's on this topic http://forum.eternalcrusade.com/threads/player-statistics-and-the-infamous-kill-death-ratio.1222/
I did not know about that post, thanks for the link. I like the idea of Kill count without death count.
