One: you're recruits, not seasoned veterans so don't expect everything to go as planned because in reality, you don't have the experience to pull it off. Unlike other Role plays people have been in, this is really a fresh start for each character in which past experience is very very slim. Two: Compare in your minds image what your characters look like to that of those the guards are already seeing. There is a definite mis-match between the two drawn up which would automatically raise suspicion. There's also times when a person may appear to be onto you but is in fact simply testing you with a very serious poker face. Think Witcher III when in Novigrad, appearances are everything but sometimes they are in fact a ruse.
