Are these ever intended to be playable? Could they work either as an individual elite choice or as a main player character/PC? Or if they make Inquisition a Faction with ordos Malleus, Hereticus, Xenos and Sicarus (who monitor the Officio Assassinorum) as branches, would that enable you to take more than Assassin as a special elite choice? Any thoughts on this?
To be honest, rather not... All assassin types will promote solo-play in an environment where it's supposed to be heavily co-op oriented... The sniper-type? He'll just dick around way away from everything, not really contributing much. The more stealthy solo-killing things? They'll just dick around on their own, taking out single targets here and there, contributing quite minimally. That said, snipers and assassins have a place on the battlefield, BUT in online games, especially MMOs, people tend to not give a damn about others (except within guilds/clans). Have a look at the Call of Duty or Battlefield -games, and their snipers not giving a damn about the rest of the team (especially objective-based BFBC2 games, in my experience), just sitting there whining "I'm a sniper, I'm a sniper"...
I think that the melee assassin could work but if you add the sniper one then the other races need snipers as well to make it fair and I dont feel like charging in for the emperor and then having my head blown off.
In a BF2 realism mod known as Project Reality, sniper rifles were limited to 1 per 18 players (so 4 in a 64). The snipers were assets to be used. They were primarily supposed to be used for recon, with GTLD (ground target lazer designators), think tau pathfinders with markerlights. Also the rifle itself was difficult to master, espicelly at max ranges , required a decent set up timer (posistioning) and use of a breathing system, mildots, range finders etc Far removed from CoD type sniping, it was my favourite way to wage war in that game. Taking out enemy squad leaders first to disorganise the enemy, take out the medic who attempts to revive him and from there the enemy is pinned down and might not even know where the fires coming from. Use of smoke gernades and surpressive volley fire was the only solution (besides calling in close air support in that snipers ass) Sniping can work in vidya and shouldnt be dismissed because many FPS' add sniper rifles.
While the chaotic activity that 16 slices of 4 racial empires would be *excellent* cover for any Imperial (or heretic/xeno) Assassination attempts -- I can't personally approve the idea. It just kind of goes against the overall feel of the game, to me. "Be an elite soldier of the 41st millenium!" ..."Or, uh. The skulking bro in a skullmask sneaking up behind that tricksy eldar."
probably because snipers are a tiny portion of any real armies numbers EDIT though my own military service experience would indicate that 1/18 is still being insanely generous as a ratio, when I served my regiment had about 4000 personnel and only about a dozen of us had sniper certs ... which would work out at around 1/333 lol
Because snipers kill team based FPS games. People are instantly drawn to the kill from a distance. Don't listen to what the other guy is telling you, the sniper limit is gameplay only.
